Legs hurt

I've recently started running again, (not far & not for long), but that evening or the next morning my feet, ankles & knees hurt. I thought it might be my shoes I've had them a little over a year, but I haven't been running in the last year & I only wear them for going to the gym (elliptical & some weights) but that wasn't consistant until probably the last 2 months. I didn't use my gym/running shoes for anything other than that. Can shoes break down that fast? Or is it just old age creeping up (44 yo). They hurt when I first get up but after I move around a little & get the circulation going then I'm fine.
