Waiting on Humane Society Adoption App...

UGH I am SO IMPATIENT!!! :embarassed:

I volunteer at my local humane society every couple weeks to socialize with the animals, brushing and walking. This weekend I met Brewster, an adorable DMH cat, about 3-5 years old, very pretty markings. He is the sweetest cat EVERRRR. He loves to be brushed and have his belly rubbed and sitting in my lap!! :smooched: I spent about an hour with him Saturday before asking for an adoption application. When I called my roommate, she put up a bit of a fuss (even though she has two cats :noway: ) to the point that they asked me to come back with the app the next day. I did one better and brought my roommate (who felt bad) and they took my application after they saw that she was then fine with the idea (and suddenly wants another kitten LOL). So there is a 24-48 waiting period during which they call your references and landlord, but they aren't open Monday or Tuesday, so I have to wait until even as late as tomorrow to hear whether I can take this little man home!! :ohwell: They called this morning which was a TOTAL fake-out, because it was just about my rental property (apparently I put down the old manager and we have a new landlord, but she's fine with pets). That was at about noon and now it's 3:30 and I still haven't heard anything! I'm worried!

Wow ..what a process. Here you can walk in and adopt and take home your new friend within an hour. There are so many cats at ours that I think they just want to move them out. We got both of our cats and one of our dogs there. We have lots of love in our home ( fur too)

    I hope you get Brewster!

I think it's so great that you are adopting a kitty. I didn't adopt mine but got them from someone that was giving them away and I love them so much. We just had them neutered a couple weeks ago and they're doing great. I hope you hear from the Humane Society soon. I think it's great that you volunteer time too.

Yea, I am glad they have a good screening process but at the same time some of the kitties and puppies there have been there over 2 years! Surely SOMEONE came along in all that time that was a good owner!?

I am thinking of calling just to check on the status of my application...I am going crazy worrying. :frown:

Well I ended up calling back because I couldn't STAND the suspense!
Turns out they hadn't even done anything but call my landlord who hasn't returned their call yet, and she is notoriously hard to get a hold of. :grumble:
Not only that, but the manager was RUDE to me, and when I asked if I could bring in the actual lease agreement that showed the pet policy, she said we had to give my landlord time to return the call and if she didn't after a while, then we'd talk about other options. What the heck? They called her 4 hours prior to that and left a message that she hadn't returned, and that was at 4pm. What's so difficult about letting me SHOW you the actual agreement? They are really putting me through the ringer on this, making me wait an extra day before they'd even take the application and now being rude to me and making me wait an extra day or two (after they hear back from the landlord they have to contact my references). I certainly want this kitty, but I have nothing good to say about this HS. A lot of their cats are sneezy and some have really badly matted hair. They'd be WAY better off in a home. :brokenheart:

I'm sorry you're going through the trouble and they're making you wait.

I have no doubt you'll get the little fuzzy baby and be a great kitty mama. :flowerforyou:
  • I'm a vet in upstate NY and the shelters around here are begging people to take animals and provide good homes. Sounds like this shelter might need to loosen up a little so people interested in providing good homes aren't scared away by the red tape and hoops to jump through.Good luck, I know you're already attached emotionally.

I really am. My friends keep telling me to stop stressing, but I can't help it! I grow attached to animals far more easily than to people. I could really use some unconditional love lately, I've been under an unusual amount of emotional stress. It's frustrating to have to jump through all these hoops and see the poor little guy (among many others) stuck in their cages for months or years.
  • sometimes I wonder if these "no kill" shelters are really fair to the animals. what kind of life is being kept in a cage for years without a real home? Sometimes I wonder if the quality of life is really there and if the animal is happy. I would never want to have to put down animals that have a chance of finding a good home, but sometimes I wonder.

good luck!! Glad you found a soul mate.

Awww I really hope you get Brewster :) I adopted my kitty from a shelter 4 years ago and he is ia wonderful addition to my family. He was so shy and wouldnt come near anyone and now he wont leave anyone alone. He even stands up to the dog when he comes to cuddle and the dog tries to push him away from us.

I hope your landlord gets back to the shelter soon because Brewster deserves to come home with you asap! Good luck with everything!!!

Just remember that no matter how long the process is...you are granting this kitty the best thing in the world...a happy cozy home with people that will love him unconditionally.
While growing up my family only had rescue animals (a total of 4 dogs and 13 cats) most of which were not rescued from a HS or a rescue group...but dumped on our property. My husband and I have three rescued dogs now...one from a shelter that does put animals down (Rayne only had 1 day left-JRT), one that was dumped at the end of our street and I nearly ran her over with my car (Heidi-Dachshund), and one that was the result of my husbands friend allowing their dog to become pregnant and the were just going to dump the puppies at a shelter if they couldn't find homes for them...we got the runt...the one that was going to go to the pound (Grace-JRT/Chihuahua mix).
My in-laws are also into rescue-they have 4 (3 JRT and 1 Chihuahua)
    One set of bro/sis in-laws have 2 (1 JRT and 1 Pit/Lab mix)
    Other set of bro/sis in-laws have 3 (1 JRT, 1 Chihuahua, and 1 Feist)
All rescues...I couldn't imagine what these animals would be like if they did not have a family to belong to.
Needless to say that holidays are nuts....12 dogs in one house, lol.

Wow, what a great thing you are doing for those animals! Without you they would probably be hungry on the street or worse. I feel so bad for these animals I see weekend after weekend, having been there for years, missing out on the love and companionship of an actual home. There are a couple dogs I would LOVE to bring home but we have a 25 lb limit, and these are pit/lab/german shep mixes, nothing even close to that limit LOL.

blakgarnet, I have thought about that too. These animals can't come out of their cages for sanitation reasons, so they are stuck in little 8 square feet cages (for the cats) and the dogs runs are actually some of the smallest I've seen. The dogs at least get to go for walks.

There is a PetSmart right near my house, but their adoptions are a bit more expensive even for unneutered kitties. They are a really nice facility though!

Ughh...the landlord said no because we have 'so many' animals in the apartment (2 cats?) And now she is trying to evict us because we asked her to make some badly needed repairs and she apparently doesn't understand the concept of a lease agreement. It's a bad situation. :frown:

Can she even say no? Wasn't there a clause in the rental agreement about how many and what types you could have. If you haven't violated any agreement than she cannot deny you the right to have another pet. Also, she cannot evict you on any ground when she is responsible for the maintenance of the property that she owns. Check over the lease again. If she has violated it you can go to a lawyer or the police and make sure that she cannot evict you based on just her whims. She would have to go though a lot of trouble to evict you early if your lease is not up yet. Lots of paper work. Look into it. Best of luck!

Yea, we're going to look into the free legal aid on campus. I know what she's doing is unlawful, but it's stressful nonetheless. Ironically, my parents are landlords, so they are sort of laughing at her attempts to scare us. We are actually utilizing the VA Landlord Tenant Act, and it looks like she's just pulling things out of....you know.
