Hello Everyone,

I've been here since Monday and as of today have lost 3lbs. I'm looking forward to the weekend my whole family is going to Tahoe for the day to do some hiking and then for lunch - problem is more then likely we will be having lunch at one of the buffet's at the casino.
I know to stay away from anything fried, creamy and deserts.
Does anyone have any tips or advice on anything else that can help me get through this meal and stay on track??

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Most buffets have a kick *kitten* salad bar. Hit the salad bar first, eat that, then start looking at other things. It will be much easier to resist the less healthy stuff if you arent starved, plus, you wont be able to eat as much if you do give in.

Also, when I travel, trying food is really important to me, so I eat well for two meals, stay active (most times I am pretty active from walking/sightseeing/etc) and have one meal i dont worry about. Works for me. I still get to enjoy a good meal, but dont totally blow my diet.

And, if you really, REALLY want something, have a small portion. Letting yourself have a bit of something you want when you want it can help you from eating too much of something else later on. Remember - all things in moderation.

Other things high in calories: rice, pasta dishes, breads Doesn't mean you should stay away from those items entirely - just means you should be aware of calories up front.

    Most of all, have fun!

Go small portions and try to only do one trip. Try to stay away from desserts and focus on fruits.

But you're hiking in Tahoe (should be beautiful) so you can eat a little because you'll be burning a lot of calories.

Also, I find it helpful to record food on the MFP mobile app so I know what my calorie "budget" is.

Either have a salad before any main course meal or make a big salad as your meal, if possible.

Eat some almonds before you go & you most likely won't be as hungry. Stick to the salad bar, and veggies/fruits. Saw my doctor today & she keeps reminding me that portion control is everything. I have a little 2 ounce ramekin that I take with me to buffets so I can readily measure out what 2/4 ounces is of anything I eat. Makes it easier when I come on here to log my food.

Drink a large glass of water before you eat. This way you will get full quicker. Like everyone said, salads, veggies, grilled meats....
  • I know that it is kind of simplistic but get a copy of the "My Plate" picture and try to apply that when at the buffet. Buffets are tough, even the salad bars just be mindful of what you are doing when faced with the buffet. Oh and preview it too. That way you will know just how to and with what you want to load your plate with.

Above all.. If you happen to go over your goal for the day... make it the exception and not the rule.. It is not the end of the world.. Really. It will be ok. This is a marathon and not a sprint. Keep at it but on occasion if you go over, it is ok.. Just be mindful of what you are doing and don't throw caution to the wind.

Try using a big plate for your salad and a smaller plate for your entrees. It makes you feel like you are getting more. If you have to have dessert, they usually have a soft serve frozen yogurt that would sweeten your sweet tooth :)

Small portions is a great idea. If you limit your self all of those tasty things, you may be setting your self up for failure. Drink a glass of water.... Eat a salad.... lean meats and steamed veggie.... then have a treat if you want or even a spoonful of mac and cheese! Have a great time with your friends and family. It's not like you will be doing this every day. Log your food so tomorrow you can look back on it and push just a wee bit harder to burn any of those food choices that are weighing on your mind :)
