BodyMedia Users

So I got my BodyMedia Link yesterday. I set it up and started using it after it was fully charged. I felt like maybe it was a little off on the steps but figured it was just the first day and not even a full day. So I was doing a test at a doc's office today(still have to go back after the lunch break) where I did the 30DS Level 1 video (they asked which DVD I would prefer or do I want the treadmill) while hooked to all sorts of electronic devices. It estimated my average HR at 155 and calorie burn at 249. The BodyMedia estimated my calorie burn at 111. That's a HUGE difference! I am a new user so I was hoping for some tips; maybe I set it up wrong.

Oh and I am doing the treadmill when I go back in so hopefully I can figure it out by then because that seems a good way to calibrate the device (by checking it against the doc's equipt).

I have a Body Media. When you say you burned 249 was that calories burned during a specific time while hooked up to equipment and the 111 is also the calorie burn during the same time?

Yes the doc's equipt said I burned 249 in 25 minutes and the BodyMedia logged the same exercise as 111.

Were you walking with a natural gait like swinging your arms or were you holding onto the handrails? Because during the time I wore my Bodymedia and my HRM I would see a calorie burn difference in spin class, for instance, for this reason.

I actually did a workout video the first round and then the treadmill (round2) I did without handrails, I tried to keep it as natural as possible.

That is weird cause I would think the doctor's equipment would be spot on. Too bad no one else has any input. But my experience with the Bodymedia was awesome. I just don't have a current subscription but when I tracked religously my weight loss was spot on. It's really a great tool. Good luck.

I don't really have much to offer. Why not call bodymedia and ask some questions? I wear the bodymedia and can only say that when I look at my numbers and then weigh in for the week, I am right on target with what the numbers say my loss should be. It's really kind of freaky, yet great at the same time.
  • I have a BM, almost a month now. LOVE IT.

As to your dilemma, it's interesting that the doc's reading was so much higher....

Question for Schitsngiggle: How do you find out what your projected weight should be week to week? I can't seem to find that.

@ Kimm, If you keep your deficit at 1000 calories a day, it's 2 pounds a week. If you need to know more send me a PM.

This is why I use a hrm I don't trust accelerometers to tell me my calorie burn. Your heart can tell you that

I was thinking about a Garmin when I start doing more miles in a week. I think they link to BM. Anyone doing this?

The food diary is not as good as on MFP. Do any of you see an issue with logging food on MFP and then creating a personal food on BM with the final MFP calculations of the day?

BTW the treadmill stress test- BM caculated 172 calories burned and the doctor calculated 189 MUCH closer than the DVD results.
