Fascinating to know that I'm not the only one who experiences this..........
  • Yep, I get this too. I smell it right away once I hop in the shower after a workout. It only lasts a few minutes but it is the weirdest thing! So glad I am not the only one. HA!

I get a vinegary smell in my nose. I've always thought I was a total freak.

The last time I was pregnant, my GP asked to smell my breath (to my un-delighted surprise...) - it would be ammonia-like scented if I was dehydrated. Maybe that could be a reason?

I have covered this in forums before but that smell is ketones (sugar). I have been diabetic for 28 years and know what this is. What you need to do when you smell this is drink plenty of water, and your body washes it out. If you are diabetic this does harm but if you are nondiabetic, you'll be fine......

I get it too. I am training for a half marathon and it's usually on the day when I add time/distance to my run. I didn't know I needed to eat as soon as I was done if I smelled that though. Great info. Thanks.
  • Thank you all.... my husband thought I was nuts! AND now I've found you and just started my own plan in "myfitnesspal". This site is great and maybe I will be able to loose it now! ....both the smell and the weight.... and as a side note I noticed my kidney area hurting last night too after the exercise and the smell.... hummmmmm this is great I found you, right?

Itsgattago....I have been on the same road as you, but in a different lane. I seem to give off an ammonia smell an hour or so after eating....without exercising. If I walk past people, I hear "Whew!" or faint whistling. People hold their noses or turn their heads when I come into a room. Eat carbs? Done that! Go the veggie route? Done that! Try Milk Thistle? Did that, too. Nothing works!!! My doctor and his staff say they can't smell it. Best friends can't smell it either. Can someone help me!!!!

Confused, no one smells it but you and perfect strangers. This does not make sense.

Might be that you're in ketosis, this smell is a common side effect from being on a low carb high protein diet..You can also get the same smell on your breath it's referred to as KETObreath

It's actually a bit different. Ketobreath is acetone, which smells like the fake nail place not ammonia.

I never described it as an ammonia odor, but I began to notice this phenomena about 8 years. I noticed the "odor" whenever I am actively burning body fat. I thought it was an odor from my body but I could never isolate a source. I asked friends if they noticed any odor from me and nobody smelled anything. That's when I knew it was something only I could notice, but was present any time I was losing weight. I thought it was something weird, so I'm glad to know other people experience it.

My doctor checked me for ketones, only trace amounts were found. Queenliz made the comment that my smell "does not make sense"....exactly! To requalify my statement, I normally don't smell it myself. Most "perfect" strangers don't smell it. Out of a hundred people, 5-10 may smell it. Those are good odds, unless your boss and the president of the company are in that small group.

More details on my condition: It appears to be protein related. I admit, I used to eat a lot of protein, but I drastically cut back intake. This week (between 60-100g a day) and wasn't hearing the "whew!" and whistle noises for a couple of days. However, I could feel my body starting to "eat itself," letting me know I wasn't eating enough of anything. Yesterday, the whew's and whistle came back. Felt a slight pain in my right kidney area. Drinking 75-125oz of water a day.

My situation is probably one of the weirdiest on this site. My doctor and his staff can't smell it, my managers can't smell it, friends can't smell it....but a few others (perfect strangers) do and the smell is bad. For example, had a Whopperito recently after work. Three hours later, I went to Mr. Pita to get some veggie pitas. The worker behind the counter handed me my bag of food with his head turned the other way....as if to say, "Whew, you stink! Here's your food, though." Embarassing!!!

Any ideas? Ph-based smell? Hormone-based? Liver? Kidneys?
