I have a 55 gallon freshwater aquarium... having trouble with my ammonia levels... so I go and talk with the people at my local fish store and they ask me how often I am feeding them.. I tell them twice daily.. he tells me that I am over feeding them, that they will literally eat til they die. The do not have whatever it is that tells them to stop eating they are full...

So I leave with my head down... I'm even over feeding my fish!!! Does it ever end??

haha well, to be fair, you are over feeding them. Once a day is plenty. I made the same mistake when i first started out with my fish tank.

Once a day and clean the bottom of the tank every 2 weeks at least

The levels are always going to be higher in a new tank with fresh water. See if you can get 10 gallons of tank water from the store. It really takes a while for is to settle in and everything to balance out. Hopefully you don't have too many fish in there. And it's good thing its not a 10 gallon or it would be even more unstable.

And once a day is good.
