Weight Loss, Will Power or Fighting Evolution?

Options
I read an interesting book lately and I thought I might share it here.

I am paraphrasing here, but in essence it claims obesity is less about will power and more about an evolutionary mechanism for survival. According to what I understand, humans are programmed to eat until we are full. It was a survival mechanism to combat starvation.

In the past we gorged ourselves at any chance because we did not know when we would eat again. That makes sense to me. Fast forward to today and food, especially unhealthy food, is abundant for most people. Unfortunately, that survival mechanism is still there. So, here we are still gorging ourselves, even though we know the next meal is only a few hours away.

Now, I know we can control ourselves with certain psychological tricks. But, is it a possibility the survival mechanism could still explain why so many people struggle with food?

So, MFP peoples, what are your thoughts?
