I'm posting this for a friend so people can mock me and not them but......

They have managed to lose 10+ lbs over the last month and a bit but their weight loss has stopped, they are still losing inches as shown by their clothes but they are getting a little disheartened that the weight loss has stopped.

We messed with the heart rate monitor this morning and they are logging about the right calorie loss but, based on my non-professional opinion, the exercises they is doing are not nearly cardio enough to maintain weight loss even though they are burning some calories.

Currently the exercises is the 30 day shred and recumbent exercise bike, I'm think they need to get on the treadmill and get the heart rate going faster.

What do other people think on the losing weight vs types of exercise, they have some way to go with the losing weight before worrying to much about toning it?

First, there is no such thing as "toning" unless you are refering to playing music? There is building or developing muscle or not. If they are losing inches but not weight that means they are going through body recomposition. They are losing fat and developing thier muscle structure. What could be more ideal?? Increasing cardio wold be counter productive. There is already sufficient cardio with the biking. What would the treadmill accomplish in addition to that beside possible cause them to lose some of that great lean muscle mass they've developed?

They should get over their obsession (and yours) with the scale and keep doing what they are doing!! If body fat is going down and the body is in better shape, who cares what the scale says!!

Tell your friend to worry more about the tape measure than the scale. Fitting into the lower dress/pant size is way more of a victory than what it says on the scale

Muscle takes up less space than fat, but it weighs more.

If they are working out, as you say, they are losing fat, which is good, and building muscle which is great (muscle burns calories!) If their measurements are going down, this is good news. Their body fat -- far more important than actual weight -- is changing.

You didn't mention if your friend needs to lose another 10 pounds or 100 pounds. As you get closer to your proper goal weight, the speed will slow down.

30 day shred and bike are good exercises. But make sure they are drinking enough water, and eating properly. (If they don't eat enough, their body will think there is a famine, and their metabolism will slow way down.) Fat needs water to burn off.

My gym just shared a cartoon from Fitness Freaks this weekend: A carrot (with a face, arms and legs) holding a sign: "Work hard at the gym. Work even harder in the kitchen." If the gym says that, it must be true! :)

    Good luck!

Definitely what she said!!! Nobody will weigh me when I get to walk into a store and buy non-plus sized clothes!

The problem I have with the bike is currently it is burning about 200 and some calories in 30 minutes, the treadmill gets me all sweaty and I burn 500.

I can't see a way to get sweatier on the bike

Something is wrong with those numbers. Given realtively equal intensity, bike and treadmill should yeild approximatley the same burn in the same amount of time. Also, how can you argue with the results?? Losing inches means losing fat! Isn't that the point??

PS: It's so not about getting sweatier. Sweat =/= calorie and fat burning. It means loss of water due to body temp rising. There is an indirect relationship with that and calorie burning but I could wrap myself in hefty bags and duct tape the to my body and I'd sweat like crazy but it wouldn't mean I burned a single extra calorie! You are confusing symptoms with outcomes. Look at the evidence! LOSING INCHES!! Hello??? Mcfly???

I am saying that inches is good, really I am, just looking at the weight loss piece too.

IMHO the bike isn't going to get you as many calorie without some serious programs because you are just working your legs where as on the treadmill you are moving your entire weight, which is going to increase the intensity and the calorific burn.

So the original question was about exercises that will burn more and better I guess.

Indeed, she tried on pants yesterday, that were size 18, the same size as her wedding dress of many years ago, and still going. Looking good, just cursing the scale.

I think there is such thing as toning. It means tightening up your body etc... Most people know that. Maybe people just don't know what they need to do to tone. I personally don't know when I would say toning when playing music?

OK, My none scientific definition of toning.

Turning the giggly bits into non giggly bits  I think everyone that works out is toning

If the bike has no resistance I would agree just spinning the pedals isn't going to be as hard of work as the treadmill. Sitting is just less work than standing, too. Crank up the resistance on the bike, if it has it.

How long has this supposed stall been going on? 10 lbs. in a month is great. If the exercise is new, expect the scale to quit moving for a while.

I was a constant 2.1lbs per week for 5 weeks, then nothing for the last 2.

Weight loss is not linear. This person is making great progress. If I were them, I wouldn't change a thing!

My question is if they're still losing inches, why do they care that the relatively arbitrary number on the scale isn't moving? Isn't the whole point of weight loss to get smaller and leaner? Obviously that's still happening, so why does it matter? Weight is a poor reflection of health and fitness anyway.

although the scale is important, it isn't the most important thing in life! I recently found my Atkins journal with my measurements from 8 years ago...take a look at this!

    age 29*******************age 37

    weight 174************weight 207

    chest 38***************chest 40

    waist 37.......................waist 40

    hips 42***************hips 42.5

    thigh 24**********thigh 23.5

    size--tight 14***********tight 14, loose 16 ( depending on cut/brand)

I am 33 pounds HEAVIER than I was back then, but my measurements are pretty darn close! I now have muscles that I am not sure I ever had. By the time I get down to that 174lb mark, I might be in a size 10! I would happily be 174lbs with muscle definition wearing a size 10 than 145 pounds in a size 12.

If you are getting smaller who cares what it says on the scale. It doesnt matter.

We are all here to improve the way we look and improve general health, scale weight is secondary.

Nobody sees anyone else's scale weight. Nobody truly cares about how much another person weighs. What matters is how they look. If this friend is getting smaller, then that is a victory. Their body is changing. They're getting fitter than if they were just losing fat. Tell them to just keep doing exactly what they are already doing, the fat loss will eventually come back. Patience is the name of the game with weight loss. It's not linear and sometimes it takes weird detours, but if you're doing it right, it always comes back.
