Cooking Barley

I'd like to try making barley as a side dish for some stew tonight based on having had it that way in France, served sort of like rice. Does anyone ever do this and have any tips/recipes aside from just boiling it? I've only used it in soups up to now. Thanks!

I have a similar recipe like the one found at http://www.eatingwell.com/recipes/barley_hoppin_john.html. I don't add the BEPs though.
