YOU WILL NOT GET BULKY BY LIFTING HEAVY WEIGHTS.

But you WILL lose more body fat and you will be a stronger, healthier individual.

Sincerely:

The rest of the world.

You'd think so, but every day there's about 50 threads like this:

I saw that.. and I shake my head.

Today I was lifting 20 pound dumbbells, doing pull ups/dips, and using 50 pounds for my walking lunges/step ups and squats.. clearly I am going to explode in some she hulk from all the weight.

I often see the "You Won't Get Big" threads and think "fck, do we really need to do this again" And then I see the "I don't want to get big" threads and think "fck, yes we do need to do this again."

And every day there are about 50 threads like this. The horse is dead. He has joined the choir invisible. He is an ex-horse. Please stop beating him.

Just direct the women who fear bulk to Ellen Barrett and/or Exhale workouts (great high rep, low weight workouts) and call it a day. Your work is done. Seriously my body is screaming after I've done a full Exhale workout or two, DOMS like crazy, even more so than one of my "heavy" weight workouts. You haven't met failure until you've lifted 4 lbs dumbbells for infinity. I prefer my "heavy" workouts because they're easier.

Crap, I'm a 6'3" 230lbs male and I lift hundreds of pounds and I'm not even close to bulky. Maybe I need to switch to the pink dumbbells apparently because they instantly make you bulk up.

I have to say that I don't understand it. How on earth can those things be so hard when you're barely doing anything?

Appreciate the intention behind the thread but both threads about getting bulky and about not getting bulky are getting equally annoying and taking up space. Some women here will just never learn no matter how many times it is beat into their head. They will learn eventually.

Anything is hard if you do enough times. If you just raise your arm without any weight 200 times it's gonna start to burn really badly. It doesn't mean it's a good idea compared to lifting heavier weighs for 5-10 reps. It's faster and gives better results.

I've stopped writing long-winded replies to the "I don't want to get she-hulk" threads and just started linking this pic I found

The low weight, high rep workouts have a very high dread factor for me. IMO, they are excrutiating, physically and mentally. Got my Exhale DVDs in the mail, did them once and never again.

What I think a lot of male lifters are not *getting* is that not everyone wants the same results. Bulk, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Some women prefer an activity that requires more grace than the guys grunting over in the lifting section *seem* to be pursuing. What needs to be understood are the socialization and gender stereotypes at play. Many women want a long, lean "dancer's body." It's something that's been held up as a feminine ideal since we were children. So either ignore the "fear of bulk" threads, or point them to Ellen Barrett's "Grace and Gusto" DVD and call it a day. A lifetime of socialization will not be undone with condescension and snark. And, really, they'll do just fine with a pilates/yoga/ballet strength program. I lost 20 lbs through yoga and got the tight, slender, body I'd always wanted. As for the extra hours required for a yoga practice, that's not an issue because I love yoga and am perfectly happy to have it take up so much of my time. There are many paths to fitness. Enjoy yours and let others enjoy theirs.

This is not directed at any one person, but a general comment about the unnecessary antagonism going on between men (and women) who lift heavy and those who don't. IMO, it's really pointless and causes more harm than good.

Your workout sounds similar to mine. I guess we'll BOTH explode into she-hulks then.
