Sugary drinks served at kids sporting event...

Today I went to my two younger kids awards ceremony for baseball. For each child you get four vouchers for a dinnerish type meal (and I use that term loosely). I believe the funding for it comes from the price we already pay to have our child in the sport. The dinnerish type meal included a slice of pizza or a hot dog, a bag of chips, and a drink. Today it was around 95 degrees outside, and being diabetic I just wanted a drink. The only beverage I saw out was a soda punch concoction. I inquired about a beverage without sugar and was told there was bottled water for sale for $1. I honestly do not understand this. The punch stuff was mixed into big containers, would it be so difficult to have some with water in them?
Normally this wouldn't bother me, but as I've slowly morphed into this healthier version of myself, I've realized that this is exactly why obesity is so rampant in the U.S. We pass out freely this crap food to our kids (and ourselves) and charge for the healthier versions.
Okay that's the end of my little rant...thanks for listening

I agree. Last year I was instrumental in changing the drink that came wih lunch at my daughter's school. They charged for water, but not for milk. I spoke to the director of nutrition and they now offer small water bottles as well as milk. My daughter drinks milk, but always complained that the ones at school were warm!0

Amen sister! I am a diabetic too and try to avoid process food and junk. Why do we have an obesity problem in america? Because food that is good for you costs more. If I go to Applebees and order a burger it comes with fries. If I want a salad instead, they charge me extra for that. Lucky for me that few extra dollars is no big dent in my wallet, but for most it is. Cheap food is typically very bad for you.0

I agree! Its horrible now a days. You can't even send your child to school without junk food being in their way during lunch times. Why charge for water? They should be charging for the sugary drinks!0

Thank you, that's exactly how I was feeling too. I honestly couldn't believe it and am so frustrated. They talk all the time about the rising obesity rate yet the junk is served everywhere. It's very frustrating.0

The snacking after every activity drives me INSANE. I mean, I remember doing a soccer tournament as a kid and having big jugs of water to drink and orange slices at half time (the actual fruit, not candy). It seems now parents are handing out endless snacks after every single activity. I totally get having healthy snacks on hand when the kid is expending loads of energy or the activity is very long, but snacks after an hour of little kids soccer practice? Come on!
My kid is only allowed to bring water with her. We don't do sports drinks or anything else during her various activites (the rule will be the same for the other one when he's old enough).0
