Cardio daily goals?

My daily goal is 30 min 240 cals per day 3 times a week. But the only equipment easily accessable to me is a treadmil, I"m not in shape enough yet to run or jog long enough to make a difference. But I do walk on it. The problem is it takes me more than 30 mins to burn 240 cals like around 40 mins. Does it matter that it takes me longer to burn the cals? My heart rate stays within my target heart rate.

  • Try buying the biggest loser dvd or something along those lines. They have cardio that wil get your heart rate up. Good luck!
  • I say no, I find that sometimes taking a little longer is easier on me. I'm usually fat burning, so I try to keep my heart rate at an optimum, if I go to fast I tend to pass that point. Hope this helps. Ed

If you can to forty min go with forty min. If its too much don't worry you will build endurence. I had to start with 15 min walking on a tredmill and had to work up to going fasterlonger. Don't give up you will get there!

Calories are calories--from a weight loss standpoint, it doesn't make any difference how long it takes--or even if you are in a fitness "target heart rate" zone.

Obviously, the harder you can work, the more calories you can burn for any given increment of time. From your description, quite frankly, 40 min is a better target duration than 30 anyhow.

If you feel you can do more, increase the incline on the treadmill. That will help improve your fitness, burn more calories and has no increase in impact. If you are not ready for running, or do not wish to run, then incline treadmill walking can be effective.
