2 Weeks and Frustrated. HELP!

OK, short background about me: I'm 29, 5'3" and currently at 238 lbs and have hypothyroidism that I'm treating. When I started MFP, I weighed 242 and got down to 236 but then back up to 240, now back down to 238. I'm limiting my calories and doing cardio and have stopped my bad habits. I have noticed inches coming off in certain spots but why is the scale not budging? Yes, I know scales are deceiving but after 2 weeks I thought I would have seen more of a difference by now. Any thoughts? Please help. My diary is open if you want to take a peek.

You need to be eating a lot more.....I would be sick and have a horrible headache! You need more protein for sure and should try eating at least your bmr. Your body needs some fuel.

Yes, scales can be very very deceiving so don't let that get you down. I became completely addicted to the scale and quit paying attention to how my clothes were fitting. I looked back in your food diary and your doing great on your calories and protein. I had to dramatically cut my carb intake to see weight loss even though I had my calories daily around 1200. From what I've seen, some people are highly sensitive to the carbs and some can seem to handle more. Me personally, sugar is my devil...anything white, anything starchy..even bananas for me. So that is the only thing I can see that might be a possibility?? I hope I've helped..feel free to add me if you'd like. Keep your head up, you can do this..we are all here for the same reason and can all help each other out.

    Hello MFP friend!

I looked over your diary and noticed a few things that might be holding you back from losing weight -
    1) you don't drink enough water
    2) look at your totals every day - you're over on sugars pretty consistently, over on sodium often, and the one category you should be over on (protein) doesn't happen very often.

I think the main cause may be the high sodium and lack of water. Hope this helps :flowerforyou:

I wish someone could figure out why I'm not losing

Laurie- should I be drinking more water to counteract the sodium? The sugars I think come from mostly the fruit so how can I change that?

If you're losing inches, forget the scales for a bit. My body can literally hold 5 to 10 pounds of excess water easy, whether I'm swelling or not. Take a balanced approach to your eating and exercise and you should be OK--just stick with it.

There are fruits that are low on the glycemic index. You can search online for it.

You need a lot more time than 2 weeks. Stick with it. Don't weigh too much.

I've lost 3 lbs in 2 weeks and I'm hypo as well. I've lost 5 total in almost 4 months of work. It takes a lot of time.

^^^ This It took longer than two weeks to put it on, so it is going to take much longer to take it off. Definitely start drinking more water. It will help curb your appetite. Add strength training into your workout regimen. Cardio isn't enough.

Be patient and you will see results. Also, don't pay attention to the scale so much. The # on there isn't as important as the inches you will lose, how your clothes fit and how you look and feel. If you constantly look at the scale, you will go nuts! :)

Good luck, you can do it!

Yes, that's what I've heard on MFP message boards. When you drink around 4 glasses of water a day and have high sodium intake you could be gettting water weight gain. The solution (they say) is to drink more water to flush everything out.

Berries are lower in sugar (I think bananas are one of the higher sugar fruits and I love them too, but limit them now).

I was in the same boat, I was only noticing inches come off. I completely changed my eating habits; no more sodas and the only thing liquid I consume that has calories/sugar/sodium is my coffee and creamer in the morning. The key is water, drink tons of water, it helps hydrate your body and flushes out your system. Be careful on what types of meats you eat. Below is a website that I personally love!

Another, problem I was having was portions. No matter if it was take-out or cooking in, my portions were always the same "stop eating with I was full". I talked to a trainer at the gym that I go to and they told me to use a smaller plate. I would always want to fill my plate, and eating the whole thing. So I went out to Walmart and brought some kid plates, in my mind its a full plate and I eat my full plate slowly. Instead of what my dad calls "speed eating", sit back and enjoy the food. Before I eat I drink a cup a ice water, it helps fill me up. Then after eating take a good 10-20 mins before continuing. You want to feel comfortable, not full. In the end, I would advise you to talk to your doctor. That way he/she can help you with the process.

Just remember keep positive, this journey we are making is long and hard work and we can do it!
  • Hi, I am not the best at giving advice, but try adding more protein especially at breakfast! Try to cut out the diet soda, it just makes you crave sweets and limit caffeine if you can. Keep a bottle of water with you at all times and get used to drinking when you feel bored or inactive. Drink water instead of thinking about eating. I have had ups and downs with my weight and keep restarting my own diet. but I know when I avoid sugar, I can drop the weight. The body resets itself in 5 days, the fourth day being the toughest. If you can eliminate sugar from your diet in five days, you wouldn't want it anymore. Oh, and if you have to eat fruit, always eat it with or after a meal. Good luck to you.

Yes, definitely eat more. I am 5'9, 174lbs and I eat at 1500 a day. I've calculated my BMR with many different tools and its always around 1500-1700 given my sedentary job. I would suggest eat at your BMR. That will probably help a lot. This has helped me a lot to stay on track because I can lose (slowly) while staying full. Keeps me on track. Also, foods that keep you fuller longer have lots of protein or fiber. Breakfast is so important!!! It should be your largest meal of the day, but I can't always swing that. Eat things for breakfast that have lots of protein. That really helps me stay full until lunch.

It's my view that at 5'3", 238 lbs.and suffering from hypothyroidism, you are almost certainly insulin resistant. You should talk to your doctor about the possibility of going on a high fat, moderate protein, low carb diet. I think you'd be a perfect candidate.

In the meantime, avoid sugar at all costs -- replace it with Stevia or Truvia. In your particular circumstance, I think it would be very wise to limit fruit consumption -- at least to very low glycemic load fruits.

Again, check with your doctor, but if I were you, this is what I'd do: 1300 calories: 72 g fat; 97 g protein; and 66 g carbs. One great way to get your fat is with coconut oil, a medium chain triglyceride, that is immediately available energy in the form of ketones. It's also highly unlikely to ever be stored as body fat.

This was the framework that helped me to lose 102 lbs. and 21.4% body fat in seven months. If you used this framework, I'd be stunned if you didn't get back to your 150 in a year.
