Confused about caloric intake

If I burn calories, my food journal tells me to eat as many calories as I burned. How exactly would that help me lose weight? Doesn't that make the amount of calories I burn kind of pointless if I'm supposed to eat them back? Please help I don't get it!

    because when you join MFP it is already setting you at a calorie deficit depending on how much you want to lose per week, check out the newbie thread there is so much good infor there :)
