It seems that bagels have been my culprit on my going over in the carbs. whenever I am not eating bagels I am doing pretty good on carbs. I also need to cut out white bread, and rice. I start with my biggest weakness first bagels. can I enlist the help of you guys to keep me accountable to taking a permanent vacation from bagels starting tomorrow.

Sigh, I gave up bagels last month.
I'm with you, sister.0 -
I was hoping you had an open food diary so I could see what your carbs were set at. I feel like mine must be really high or something? Cuz I never had a problem staying under! And I eat bagels, bread, crackers, the works! lol0

Good luck. I don't eat them that often, but a permanent vacation? NEVER!!
Seriously, good luck! Stay strong.0 -
you are planning to give up bagels for life? :noway:
I would never do that. Luckily, with the help of MFP, I don't have to. I just exercise a little more to make up for higher-calorie items.
I refuse to eliminate foods I love.0 -
I plain on setting my diary public tommorrow when I begin the kick off. but my high carbs are: rice, bread, bagels.
I am way low on the protein so the calories I waste on bagels will be moved to proteins. giving them up just till I can exercise the discipline to limit them .0 -
I would never give them up permanently. Giving up certain foods is the number one way to make myself fail.
Get the mini bagels.0 -
It looks like when you go over your carbs, you've had several higher-carb items in a day. Instead of completely cutting items out that you like to eat (which I would worry could backfire eventually) why not just have smaller amounts? So, instead of having a bagel, potatoes, rice and crackers all in one day, have potatoes and a bagel, and the next day have rice and crackers. Or, just have smaller portions. For most of the days filled in in your diary, you haven't gone over your carb limit anyway, so it doesn't look like you have a massive problem there!0

Have you tried Bagel Thins?0

I wouldn't cut them out completely. If you enjoy them, then eat them! Whenever I completely cut out a food I love I end up falling of the wagon and gaining more than I lost. I would recommend eating them but in moderation. Maybe 2 bagels a month. Or just one side of the bagel, or a smaller bagel. I'm also trying to pair my carbs with protein and it seems to be working well. Just a thought! I'm a firm believer in eating what you love but learning how to incorporate it into a healthy lifestyle!
p.s. looooove bagels0 -
I had one last week and regretted it. It wasn't tasty enough or nutritious enough to be worth the calories. I used to eat muffins and sausage gravy with biscuits just about every morning. A bagel is a step up from that, but I have found more nutritious foods that are lower in calories that I enjoy.
I agree though. Bagels are not worth the extra calories!0 -

You can still have sausage gravy with biscuits! Don't despair! You just have to change up the recipe. I make whole wheat biscuits and turkey sausage gravy now. Still just a once in a while treat, but worth the calories now.0 -
I buy a package of bagel thins once every 2-3 months. I limit myself to 2 per week. When the package is gone I dont buy more for another couple months.0

Have you tried Bagel Thins?
Being a bagel lover, I would suggest taking a look at Bagel Thins as well. Whatever you decide though, good luck! Once the mind is set the body follows0 -
I really dont say NO to anything. I just say How Much or not today!!
Then I don't feel like I am depriving myself, just putting a new limit on it.
Bagel thins give me the satisfaction.. without the huge carb/calorie count!!
but since I gave myself the ok to have things like that -- I generally find myself not wanting it anyways!!0 -
Another vote for bagel thins (or bagel flatz)!0

Well I was buying them at the cafeteria at work. So I can't change that recipe. I need quick, easy food for breakfast. I can make it home though sometime.0 -

yea, I gave up the "eat out" sausage gravy too. But if you make it at home on the weekends, it's not that hard to heat up and bring with you to work.0 -
i had to give up bagels for a long time b/c i love them so much i would eat one every day. i have about one a month now, and feel just fine about it.0

I just eat the bagel thins which are only about 100 calories or so...or just half of a small bagel.0
-
<~~Not sure how the world economy (especially in the US) would fare if there was a Weight loss boycot on Bagles!!! We would perish!!!!!! LOL0
-
I don't eat them a lot, but recently discovered the Lemon Poppyseed and I am hooked! Unfortunately they are a limited edition :sad:0
-
I needed to take breads off my menu except on free day.
Breads were my weakness being Italian and having a baker as a client who paid me in free bread....fresh products every day!
OMG.......0 -
I used to do bagels for breakfast a lot, but then I switched to oats and noticed how much better I feel and more alert. I still love bagels, but I haven't had one in a while and I'm completely okay with it.0

there are these things called thin bagels by Thomas. They are just as big on the circle but they are half as thick. they are really good, 110 calories and 25 carbs. or you could try mini bagels0
-
Count me in for Bagel Thins too! Love to make breakfast sandwiches out of them.0

Have you tried Bagel Thins?
^^ If you haven't already you should definitely try them! Being a native New Yorker (home of the best bagels ever) eating bagels are practically second nature to me, and I don't think I could ever give them up. I find Thomas' bagel thins almost as delicious as the real thing and with only 110 calories and 1 gram of fat per bagel thin it's definitely a healthier alternative. They do have 24 grams of carbs per bagel thin so if you're watching carbs you may want to limit the bagel thin to one or two per week.
Also, in my experience depriving myself of foods I love is just setting myself up for failure. I eat what I like just in moderation and I make healthier choices whenever possible, however I never totally deprive myself anything. I've lost 84lbs thus far so eating a bagel every now and then hasn't hindered my weight loss progress in the least.
Whatever you decide good luck!0 -
I had a half bagel for breakfast with cream cheese. Everything in moderation. But you do what you gotta do for YOU!0
-
hahaha i read beagles
That being said, I was heavy on the bagels for a while one for breakfast and sometimes one for lunch...Talk about calorie and carb over load. I too suggest looking at bagel thins as a swap out. You may have to try a few brands, some are like dry carboard.0
