CALORIE INTAKE HELP

hi,

I am getting myself all confused about how many calories I should be eating a day as I don't want to put myself into starvation mode.

I am generally eating 1200-1400 but exercise nearly every day and after that usually aim to have net 1000 calories at the end of the day.

I've read that anything under about 1200 per day will put you in starvation mode, but is that before or after you exercise? Not sure if I should increase my eating or if the 1200 is a gross eating calorie figure.

I am too new at this!
