Road trip snacks?

So we have a 12 hr car ride tomorrow, we'll stop for lunch. But we get snacky when we drive. In the past my husband would eat peanut M&Ms and I'd eat sour patch kids. That's not happening this time, I was thinking grapes and carrots but my husband gave me a dirty look. I thought of popcorn but we are picky and only like it fresh, so once it's in the car for an hour we wouldn't eat it. So what's your favorite low cal snack that'd work in the car? I'm still bring the grapes ;-)

  • I'll be in a similar situation to yours tomorrow! Usually I'll bring along some fruits like strawberries, apples, etc. A filling snack for me is hummus with either whole wheat pita chips or baby carrots and broccoli. I eat my granola dry so that works out for me too. Oh, and Cliff bars or Kashi bars are pretty tasty.

I like to have a variety of things, some salty and some sweet. Jerky (beef, turkey, etc.) can make a nice low cal snack if you aren't too worried about sodium. If you're bringing a small cooler, then grapes, baby carrots, grape tomatoes, already sliced apples or peeled oranges, and hard-boiled eggs are some options. (You can always make some yogurt dip if you don't like your veggies or fruits plain: yogurt + dip mix for the veggies or yogurt + honey + cinnamon for the fruit.) You could also bring dried fruits and nuts or a "trail mix" of some sort. I'd probably portion that out before the drive though as it's easy to eat several servings at once. And since I love to bake I'd almost certainly make some sort of "healthier" cookie to have along so as not to be tempted by candy bars and such when we stop.

I have a long trip coming up in about two weeks (around 24 hours worth of driving), so it's good to start thinking about this now.
