Cough to 5K - Just Started

Ok, so you all keep talking about the couch to 5k thing, so I had to check it out. I'm not a runner, I hate running. I'm a swimmer. I'd rather swim 10 miles before I run 1. But I thought, it says COUCH to 5k...maybe it won't be so bad. So I downloaded Robert Ullrey's podcast (which needs to be praised for not adding keeping time to my running stress!) and packed my workout clothes to take with me to work. I work in a great building with a nice long sidewalk all the way around it, so I changed clothes after work, turned on my iPod, and got to it. I had some serious doubts that I would make it through the entire thing. I haven't run in years and my feet hurt when I'm walking the mall for more than 15 minutes. But I was going to push myself to do as much as I could, short of actually injuring myself. But guess what...I actually did the whole darn thing! A few modifications: my walk was certainly not brisk and my jogging could use some development in the form area. However, I actually jogged all sections and made it through the entire 30 minutes. 30 MINUTES!! I was definately feeling the burns, but no pains of any kind. I do have a very small blister on my right foot, but I think I just need to tighten my shoelaces a little more. I'm going to try that next time and see if it helps.
Anyway, I just wanted to say a word of thanks to all of you who are talking about this program. It has certainly motivated me to do something I dread...run! But it's fun this time...(did I just say that?)

I thought you were trying to say something about training through a bad cough.
I'm going to finish up week 2 tomorrow. Then the real training begins. You can force your way through a minute, and minute and a half of running. But Three minutes sounds so much longer.
I will say I've starting to look forward to the training sessions. I was even on a local running website trying to pick my first organized 5K.0 -
I did a couch to half marathon program last fall. I think picking out a race is the best thing you can do. Make sure and sign up for the race and pay your money. That way you are committed. I have been making sure to set goals before I reach my current goals. I am currently training for a full marathon in February 2010 with a few 5ks thrown in between now and then. I am also starting to plan out next year. I want to know what training I have to start and when to meet all my goals.
My other suggestion would be to involve other people. If you have to meet some one you are much more likely to go out and train then if you are by your self.0
