My older brother's girlfriend went gluten free after some kind of surgery and he said she lost 50 lbs just from that, no other changes. Now he is nagging me about how I should go gluten free. He says "gluten is gluttony" which to me says that he's an idiot and doesn't know the meaning of the word gluttony.. but anyway! My question is, Have any of you gone gluten free and lost a lot of weight because of it?

Removing a particular food group arbitrarily isn't a wise course of action. Most people go gluten-free for medical reasons. Possibly she was eating a carb-heavy diet and cutting out grains cut out a large amount of sugar that she was taking in?

Gluten free is not calorie free. You still have to watch calories.

I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in April and had to go gluten free because it is the only way to manage it.

I have lost 21lbs since then.

I will say, though, that there are lots of gluten free substitute breads, pasta, cakes, cookies, etc.... you need to stay away from these if you want to lose weight. They are empty calories and have no nutritional value.

    Good luck!

I went gluten free once when I suspected that I was sensitive to it - I found that if I had cereal for breakfast, a scone mid morning, a sandwich or bagel for lunch, by the afternoon my stomach was in agony.

I dont recall losing much weight from going gluten free, but I could see how cutting out all those starchy carbs would help!

But I think you're right, he's an idiot.

Gluten free won't help you lose weight by itself. Ignore him. There is no evidence that there is any benefit in eliminating gluten for people who are not gluten sensitive.

I don't eat gluten but have plenty of other places I get calories from. I still have to watch what I eat.

I suppose you could try it...but most people go gluten free due to gluten intolerance. If you don't have a medical condition, I think it would be very hard to stay motivated to continue that lifestyle.

I have no idea why going gluten free has become a fad. People eliminate gluten from their diet due to a gluten intolerance or in the most severe cases, Celiac Disease. Other than that, gluten is not evil. Do some research, don't just follow heresy.

This is why I was posting. in general i think he is an idiot who thinks he knows everything. I have no intentions of joining the fad I was just curious. Thanks :)
