Diabetic help

I've been on here for little over 2 months and am doing well. My questions is about being diabetic. My DH is diabetic and due to job cannot take insulin. He has been told he can get off meds if he gets sugar in check. The big problem is he has an incredible sweet tooth. Can anyone make any suggestions on ways I can make things for him that might not be so bad on his sugar. I've begun experimenting using Splenda in some of my baking.

His biggest "sweet" vice is dulce de leche (sp). If there is any way I can make that it would be incredible. Even a nice flan recipe would be nice. His early years were in Argentina so he's very specific about what he likes because he says he knows the real thing.

This would be beneficial to me as well I assume because I've been told I'm pre-diabetic.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me.

make your flan with splenda or other artificial sweetener. It won't taste as good but you get used to it. You may want to start by using 1/2 sugar 1/2 splenda. I also often reduce sugar in recipes and see what happens to the texture and taste.

Sugar can be important for the structure and texture of baked goods. Again, experiment with your regular recipes and see what works.

Fiber can reduce the impact of sugars on blood glucose (BG) reading. Changing from white to 100% whole wheat bread can help. Bread, potatoes and noodles will also increase BG along with fruit.

We have a diabetic board here you might want to find. Lots of great, helpful people. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/forums/show/1789-type-2-diabetes-support-group

Increasing exercise can help lower BG.

It sounds like seeing a nutritionist or taking a diabetes class would be helpful. Check with your dr. about that.

You might not want to hear this but if means that much to him why can't he stop eating desserts etc. I'm not saying its going to be easy and I have a bf who is type 1diabetic. But at the end of the day if he needs to cut out all un natural sugars except for a treat once a month or so then he has to do it for his life.

Then all the standards apply; brown is better than white in pasta and bread etc, keep fruit to a minimum. Eat regularly to stop sugar levels dropping. Try to keep them at a constant.

It's not strictly the sugar that will get him, it's the total carbs. Carbohydrate in your diet is broken down into glucose and enters the bloodstream at varying speeds depending on all sorts of things like the amount of fat and fiber it was consumed with. Your DH may find his blood glucose improves more by cutting back on things like breads, rices and pastas than on the occasional sweet items.

My wife and I are both diabetic and, in moderation, can both enjoy sweet items. What we can't enjoy is giant plateloads of carbs or cans of full sugar soda. But that's about the only limitations.

Ask your DH which he prefers, "dulcedeleche" or his penis getting erect. Fact, 50% of diabetic men over the age of 50 are IMPOTENT. Does he smoke cigarettes? If he does, I'd be amazed if he can get it up.

    ^^^^ Well said Doc! I agree 100 %.

Do you get "Diabetic Cooking" magazine? Some great recipes in there.

Also try Allrecipes.com some more great ideas for healthy desserts. They have a black bean brownie recipe on there that's so good, it tricked my chocoholic fiancee.

    I have type I diabetes...I understand your frustration :(
