I hear alot of people say they don't eat meat. I eat fish. If fish isn't meat what is it. Can anyone clear this up for me?

In my mind, it is meat. It has a face, it had parents, it's meat.

People also (wrongly) claim they are vegetarians but they eat fish. In my opinion, most people have some sort of dietary restriction they put on themselves, whether you simply choose not to eat organ meat because it squicks you out or if you are fully committed to being a vegan. Many people seem to enjoy labels that define their specialness (I am pescatarian! I am lacto-ovo vegetarian!).

In medieval times, fish wasn't considered meat because it didn't bleed when you cut into it--there were no juices from cooking. It also wasn't seen as nearly as substantial as other kinds of meat (like poultry and red meat) and wasn't "meat" enough to be considered meat, and therefore was perfect for days of fasting--it didn't give you enough strength to lead to carnal thoughts and sin. Which is ironic, since fish is seen as much healthier, minus the mercury, than red meat today. Fish was also seen as a non-meat in the church, were eating meat on Fridays was a sin...but eating fish was okay. Maybe it stems from that kind of thinking?

Personally, I consider it to be meat It's an animal...it's meat. But I'm not a vegetarian,so I just worry about making it healthy and taste good. I love fish!
