I am an almost 53 year old female. I have been running consistently, 3 times a week, for about 8 months now. I have just gotten to where I can run over 30 minutes without stopping to walk. (That was a goal of mine for the year. So excited that I've met that one.) I ran 40 minutes this morning, really slow non stop, and about 1/2 of that was up fairly steep hills. I tell you this just to let you know where I am fitness wise.

I would love to run a marathon someday. I tell everyone I'm going to when I'm 80. Anyway, my more short term goal is to increase my times on my 5K runs and run a 10K. I am thinking about trying the Jeff Galloway method and would like to buy one of his books. Which one would you recommend? Or would you recommend I do something else all together.

If you are already running without taking walk breaks, don't go to the Galloway method. If you really want to know how to train to gain long term success and fitness, buy the book Daniels Running Formula, by Jack Daniels.

    Thanks.
  • I am reading "Better Runs: 25 Years' Worth of Lessons for Running Faster and Farther" by Joe Henderson. He highlights some of Galloway's method, some of his own, and some other accomplished runners' methods. There is actually a forward by Galloway. It was written in the mid-90's, but (I hope!) a lot of what he wrote still holds true today. You can get it on amazon.com for a few bucks...

If you want to train with Galloway's method I recommend you join one of his training groups if there is one in your town. Running with other people helps a lot.

I am pace group leader for the Galloway program in my town and can answer any questions you might have.

Contrary to popular belief his method does not require you to do all runs with walk breaks, only the long runs.

If you want to use his method to train for a marathon I recommend Galloway Training Programs on this page http://www.jeffgalloway.com/store/. That is the same book people are given when they join his training groups.

Thanks scott81. I just think, mentally, I could do longer runs easier if I knew I was "supposed" to walk part of it. I'll check out this book and may get back with you if I have questions.
