If a person works out so they have "extra" calories to cover their beer consumption does it all equal out the same as if they were eating those extra calories? You always hear about beer being "empty" calories.
Is there such a thing as "empty" calories?

Nope, a calorie is a calorie. Sure, some foods give you more than others (fibre, vitamins, mineral, protein, etc, etc, etc) but ultimately it's all fuel. If you've met your rdi for all the important things, there's nothing wrong with enjoying a beer and bag of chips. Well, provided you can afford the calories!0

I always assumed the phrase "empty calories" meant calories with little nutritional value. At least that's the way my grandparents used it when they started to get on me about my former junk food obsession.0

Beer is nutritious. Nutrition and the lack of water that wouldn't kill you is the entire reason they started brewing it in the first place. BUT I think it makes a difference what kind of beer you eat.0

Well, first you gotta define the terms "empty calories". Since this terms means different for everybody. Its the same as "clean eating", everybody have their own definition
My definition: Empty calories = calories that're nutritiously lacking, comes typically from junk foods like cheetos and pop etc
Yes, in my opinion there are empty calories and I re-learned it couple of days ago (monday to be specific). I ate all day nothing but junk food and I tried very hard to stay under my calories all day. It was a hectic day and junk food was all I had available. By the night time, My head was seriously hurting from lack of nutrition. Even though calories were there, I was just hungry and my body was showing signs of fatigue and my head was hurting. So yes, there are such things as empty calories.
Does this mean we should avoid those empty calories once in a while? Nope. But we can't rely on those calories as our primary source of intake because you have to eat twice of them to satisfy your body0 -

Well it was a joke but Guinness has more protein for the number of calories than say an MGD or Bud.0 -
