The damn thing just started chasing me. I ran the same path for 4 mnths and i love it. Its partly paved and partly off road. Its a mile long and ends and begins at my house. So convenient. The owners seen it chasing me and barely tried to do anything. This is while im running on paved road. This isnt private property or anything. Wat should i do? I tried taking a stick but i just kept dropping it so i could run away from the dang thing faster. I dont want to hit this animal but it nips my heels and barks so loud i swear its gonna eat me. Can i rightly call the humane society? Can they make the owners tied up or pen up their dog? This dog terrifies me.

Go tell them if it bites you, you'll call animal control.. that should at least scare them into keeping it put away. That is dangerous..

You can call your county animal control, usually leash laws apply to any animal that is off private property. That means if the popo catch the dog off the private property (or see it), the owner can be issued a ticket and therefore learn their lesson (hopefully).

I would call your police non-emergency and they should connect you to your town code enforcer, explain your situation and that you would like to go running, and they will probably meet you on a certain day and see if the dog is off property.

I would go to the owners and express my EXTREME displeasure. If they say, "oh he won't hurt you..." Tell them you will call animal control. I don't know where you live, but I know where I grew up dog bites were a direct line to be put down. Which can be terrible but you don't want dogs attacking people either. If the dog chases you again and you have a camera phone, take a video of it chasing and nipping at you so you can show it to animal control...

YES- you can call animal control and report them if there is a leash law in your area. There is in our area and the owner can be cited having the dog off leash outside of their own fenced yard. I own a dog but I am VERY afraid of strange dogs because I have been bit before. If the owners are around I would yell at them to please restrain their dog before it bites me!! I really don't' mind people letting their dogs off leash BUT I feel VERY strongly that it is THEIR responsibility to have their dog under control at ALL TIMES!!!! There is NO EXCUSE- if you can't control your dog in all circumstances then the dog should be on a leash!!

OH- and I totally agree with another above poster; take a photo or video of the dog chasing you, call and see how the authorities can help you!!

Seriously, call the ASPCA. They need to know that the owners were neglecting to do anything about their dog's behavior. If it ever happens again, assert your authority over the dog. Stop running, look it in the eye and use a stern "NO!"

Call animal control or your local authorities and report the owners - tell them that this dog has nipped at you. There could be small children in the area that can't run as fast as you and this dog is probably a danger to them as well. There may be a law in your area that prohibits owners from letting their dog leave their property, so if the animal isn't leashed or chained they could get in trouble for it.

DO NOT USE PEPPER SPRAY ON A DOG!!! It is NOT the dog's fault that it hasn't been trained properly - it's not fair to hurt it for not knowing that it's doing something wrong! And the comment about the dog chasing you because it 'smelled fear' is pretty much a load of bull - the dog is probably chasing you because it thinks you're something exciting and you're trying to play with it. You need to speak with the owners and express your displeasure and concern (what if it was a small child it started chasing?!), and explain that if nothing is done you will call animal control to report it. I am a professional in the dog industry (walker, sitter, and trainer) and I strongly believe that ignorant and irresponsible people should not be allowed to have animals - if they don't change, feel free to report them before the dog really does do some harm to someone and gets put down because nobody took the time to train it properly. If you know the address, animal control will go and talk to the owners. But I have taught my kids that the best thing to do is to stop and stand your ground. If you show them you aren't afraid, then they will at least keep their distance from you. It worked for me with a pit bull. It was scary, but the dog could have easily outran me, and running would have turned me into prey!
