eating at night...

So I guess I've never really understood this seeing as my sleeping habits have always been messed up...people say you shouldnt eat after 5-7 pm generally...but what if your time clock is set at waking up late morning and stay up to the wee hours of the night...does that same rule still fall into effect? and does the body's burning cal rate slow down at 7pm or something?
