Diet Pills

I don't know what it is, but it's like everyone close to me ends up taking diet pills. Now usually I have an 'each to their own' attitude - but I've realized they change ones personality a bit.

My best friend from high school went psycho after taking these pills - I can't tell you how many panic and anxiety attacks I delt with. Now another very close friend is taking PX pills and he was crying on the phone last night telling me he was worried about everything and was crying all day and felt dizzy all week. It was all just too reminiscent.

And I blame the pills because I tried one, and although it suppressed my appetite I found myself curled up in bed feeling sorry for myself and I just couldn't put my finger on it. It was like a bad come down.

Has anyone had experience with these pills or ever gotten anyone to stop using them successfully? And what's your take on diet pills my lovely MFPers?

Nothing wrong with them as long as you understand the dosages. They are mostly just caffeine and few other stimulants. Not some crazy hormonal product that causes permanent psychological changes.

You could be right, maybe just some huge caffeine crash.

My little brother and his wife both went to a local doctor and were prescribed a pill called Adipex. I've lost all mine without pills, but I have nothing against them. He seemed to lose quite a bit on it at first, then it tapered off. She didn't have as good of results.

The one time I tried diet pills they put me to sleep, even though they have caffeine in them. It was weird.

Yeah they are usually just stimulants.. body builders sometimes use something called an ECA stack, which essentially tries to increase your heart rate and body temp to increase your metabolism.

Note that too much of anything is not good, and too much of stimulants can lead to other side effects.. Caffiene will usually just give you migraines during withdrawal tho :)

I have tried using something called CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) recently, which is a supplement that has shown fat reduction in a few studies, but nothing too conclusive. Its not a stimulant, just a compound found in red meat and dairy products in small amounts, but has shown to be effective somewhat in the 2g/day dosage range.

I took them in my twenties. I was a raging psycho. My mother and husband confirm. Lol
I never had that much weight to loose so they didn't really make me or break me. So i didn't have a real problem stopping.
I can also tell when my BFF is taking them. She starts acting needy or something. I can't quite put my finger on how or what she starts doing differently but it's definitely noticeable. I just tell her ....quit u are annoying me. And she stops.
  • Yes, they do cause a change in personality per se. I took them when I first started to lose weight and still do from time to time, not everyday. The stimulants in them cause someone who has a tendency to have anxiety or OCD or something along the lines to enhance their anxiety and make it worse. I've had many anxiety attacks on these pills, when normally I wouldn't. You have to watch it, it just speeds up EVERYTHING. Your mind, and your body. So if your stressed about something, your body mimics the physical manifestations of it as well, especially on the pills. I was on Phendemetrizine.

Also, I have a friend that took them, and for her, she got in a terrible moody state when the pills were wearing off ( the energy was going down, etc) and it made her cranky. Both her and her fiance can tell exactly when it starts happening. She was on Adipex.

Of course, i'm sure this doesn't happen to everybody, but from experience, it sure does happen to me. I can't take them if I already have a lot of anxiety over something that day or if I'm stressed. It just puts me in super- stressed and all over the place anxiety attack mode.

    Hope this helps!
