Newbie Using MFP for 6 month Surgery Prep _ SF Bay Area

Hi! I'm 36 years old and I'm from the Bay Area. About a year ago I went through the process of getting approved for Weight Loss Surgery at Stanford Hospital. My insurance company denied me and told me to do a 6 month, medically-supervised weight loss program and reapply. At the time I was in a very high stress job that took up a large portion of my time so I gave up and didn't start the program. Here I am, 6 months later, in a new, supportive, amazing job and I am ready to start the fight. I plan to continue to use MFP, even after the surgery (if I am finally approved) to help me meal plan.

Anyone else here pre- or post-surgery in the Bay Area? I'd love to connect.

~Erica

I'm 8 years post-WLS on August 3rd. I had the RNY gastric bypass and have over 180 lbs. I've gone through the ups & downs & ins & outs ... and even a little plastic surgery.

I'd be glad to friend you!

Good luck Ericha, MFP has opened my eyes to my lifestyle in such a positive way. Just read the success stories and you will be inspired day after day. I watched David Smith's story (the 45st virgin) last night and am in awe of the fact he did it without surgery. I have 2 family members that have had bands. For one, there is no doubt she is fitter and healthier than she has ever been and will live to see her grandchildren grow up. The other wasn't that overweight and she should have saved herself the thousands it cost because it has not made any difference. I'm with 9611 wouldn't it be great if you don't need the surgery, but it's nice to have a plan B!

I chose to go the surgery route because I have about 180 lbs to lose and have never been able to lose more than 50 and that took a year of intense workouts and very strict dieting. My father, sister and step mother have all had surgery. I just feel that in the long run 1. It will help me lose all or most of the weight. 2. I have a much better chance of keeping the weight off post-surgery than without and 3. My family history of obesity and co-morbidities makes this the best chance I have to get to a healthy weight and correct issues like high blood pressure and infertility.

Thanks for all of your support. I am so impressed by anyone who can do it all on their own.

    Best regards,
    Erica

Welcome to MFP I too thought about weight loss surgery. Everyone says it's the EASY way out...I tell anyone that thinks it's the easy way out to go to You Tube and type in gastric bypass surgery. Many of the videos would keep me on the straight and narrow for a lifetime. I know I'm going to need to have skin removed when I finally get thin and that is going to be hard enough...good luck
