So, I can not do pull ups (chin ups...)

What is a good stepping stone workout to build my way up to doing some?

Lat pulls? or something else perhaps.

Thanks,
Cara

Up until a few weeks ago, I could not do pull ups either. What I started off by doing was just trying to take my weight on the pull up bar without actually doing the pull ups. Pull ups (for me) are easier the closer my hands are together.

I can now do 20 quite comfortably.

    Let-Me-Ups

Or assisted pull ups. Stand on a box. Provide just the tiny bit of push you need from your legs.

assisted pull-ups - use a chair and push with your leg just enough to get you up. you will use your leg less and less over time.

I have never been able to do a pull up my entire life, even when i was younger and extremely muscular and fit, my shoulder joints are either double jointed or stretchy, not sure if that has anything to do with it

I'm working on doing my first "real" pull-up too. I've never been able to do it before. If I start from a dead hang, I don't go anywhere. If I start a little higher up, with my arms slightly bent, I can do several in a row. It's the very bottom of the range of motion that gives me problems. Here are the resources I've been looking at, maybe they'll help you too:
