So I'm on a 1200 calorie diet, and even tho I try to spread my calories evenly through the day I still feel really hungry!! is this ok? Do I have to go through this? I want to put my health first.

Is 1200 the recommendation MFP gave you? You also might want to open your diary, you will get better responses from this thread.

Ultimately, the answer is no. You shouldn't be actually hungry, but there may be various reasons why you feel hungry that people can help you with, which will depend on what you are eating (hence opening up your diary).

how long have you been doing 1200? that is what i did to jumpstart my weighloss to get to my goal, it was a HARD adjustment and very difficult. You just have to stick with it and your body will get used to it, later you'l be able to up your calories...

A little bit, yes (if you were eating a LOT more calories before you started this), but look to fill up on items with higher fiber & protein (with lower calories) to help you feel full, Also...drink water all day!

No, you shouldn't be hungry, if you are hungry you should eat more and gradually step down calories or increase physical activity to create a calorie deficit, but still eat as many calories as it takes to feel satisfied.

I should clarify, it's normal to feel a little hungry when eating less than you are used to, but if you feel really hungry and like you don't think you can continue with your current calorie restriction it's because your body is letting you know, you cant.

I was accustomed to eating way too much daily. When I started (1830 cal) I often felt hungry. Now, almost a year later, I must sometimes remind myself to eat more. I think it is a matter of changing old (bad) habits. Hang in there, even if you at first exceed your 1200 some days.

Depends on how acustomed to overeating you are and the types of food you are eating. 1200 calories of twinkies isn't going to feel the same as 1200 calories of steak. The general rule is protein fills you longer, Fiber fills you quicker.

Depends on what you are eating. You can actually eat quit a lot at 1200 cal/day depending on what you are eating. Protein will keep you fuller longer...get lots of fresh veggies and fruit.
  • I think feeling hungry is never okay--joking, yet serious! Find some foods/snacks that fill you up (for me it's .5 oz or 1 oz of Walnuts). And if you used to eat way more than 1200 calories, it may be difficult to adjust to this new minimum, but you will find the snacks and meals that do the trick to make you feel satisfied! Good luck on your journey!

I don't think anyone should go hungry... BUT sometimes hunger can be deceiving so you have think think about a few things.

Are you really hungry or are you just bored (or stressed or whatever)?

Have you had enough water? Sometimes when you're thirsty, the signals get crossed so you feel hungry.

Is it indigestion? I don't know how common this is but when my tummy is in distress, it feels like hunger.

Also, as someone else pointed out, make sure you're getting plenty of protein - and healthy fats too. Both help keep you full and give you energy.

As far as the carb situation goes, instead of lowering, I would suggest switching to more high fiber carbs. So if you're eating a light wheat bread, switch to 100% whole wheat and you'll get more bang for your buck. Instead of white pasta, get whole grain. Instead of white potatoes, have sweet potatoes. Etc... A little tweaking can go a long way
