In the UK last week, the BBC aired a programme called Panorama: The Truth About Sports Products (link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01l1yxk/Panorama_The_Truth_About_Sports_Products/ NOTE: only available in the UK).
For you guys, basically here is a run down of the basics. 1. Trainers. DO NOT need to be specially designed. Its totally false that special trainers save injury! 2. Hydration drinks. ARE NOT more effective than water. And for weight loss, are completely useless, as they are full of sugar (that is the "energy boost" they give you!) Low cal ones are NO BETTER than water! 3. Supplements. These DO NOT help aid faster recovery, or build muscle. There is NO evidence to this whatsoever.
So to summarise. 1. To reduce the risk of injury, warm up properly, warm down properly, dont overdo it, make sure you rest enough between workouts. 2. Rehydrate using water, only drink what your thirst tells you you need. 3. Supplements are JUST that, they are not some miracle drug that will make you feel better quicker or give you bigger stronger muscles or a leaner look, this can only be achieved with proper exercise! A proper balanced diet is ALL you need! 4. Wear trainers that YOU find comfortable.. dont be ripped off for expensive specially designed ones!
