Confused...help!

I just started tracking my calories, first time ever...and I'm really confused. I want to lose on average 10lbs a month. I'm on a 1200 calorie diet, how many calories should I burn daily? If I intake 1200, but burn 300 a day...will my body go into starvation mode? Someone help!
