Atkins Diet foods

While I am not following the Atkins Diet, or the Southbeach diet. Some research has shown me that I am sort of following part of both of them mixed together. So my question now is, I tried for the first time the other a couple of the Atkins candy bars. I really liked them. What are the pros and cons about this type of sugar free food? Any health side effects, or any reason why drinking the shakes and eating the bars for snacks could hurt my diet?

I personally don't trust those Atkins bar. I noticed in their ingredients, they have polydextrose, which is pretty much a "fake fiber" or fiber substitute that according to most of the research I've done, doesn't provide the same nutrients as real fiber. Lots of companies use polydextrose and other "fake fibers," then claim that their product is super healthy and high in fiber. Ridiculous.0

that stuff is probably better left for an emergency (like when we're stuck in a snowstorm) ...... but that being said, it just happened that I ate some granola bars for a work snack today
just don't get addicted ...... that would be bad !0 -
I think there are less expensive products that have better composition. Other than that, I don't think they'll derail you in any way.0

Thanks all, I asked also because my brother said he noticed some side effects from the "sugar alcohol" and his intestines if you know what I mean......And others have said also that they were concerned about fake sugar, etc. and the effect on your body. My sister things that it might have the same effect as the Diet Coke effect where your body thinks it is getting something sweet, but it is not so it only increases your sweet tooth even stronger instead of satisfying it? Any thoughts?

I have neve heard anything about "sugar alcohol" in the intestines. So, I can't comment other than I don't think sugar has time to ferment in your intestines. I would be slightly concerned about the 'Diet Coke" effect myself. I think there is something to that theory. As a side note, I'm not a big fan of premade bars in general. If I want a snack between meals, I'm going to have some raw almonds or cashews or a peice of fruit. I'd rather have a whole food and I'm not concerned about the sugar in fruit as long as I stay within my carb macro.0 -
Thanks mmapags, I am kind of leaning toward that my self. Just better to eat fruits and veggies, although right now the fruits have been cut out of my diet for a couple weeks to try and find a balance to get my carbs around 100 as you suggested, and my calories up.0

I would stick with whole foods. Vegetables, fruits and nuts instead of the processed foods.
To each his own though. Just my 2 cents.0 -

Your body adjusts to the sugar alcohols. The first time I tried sugar free candy was rough...but your body does get used to it. As far as the atkins meal replacement drinks...a friend of mine had bariatric surgery, and her surgeon told her that the atkins drink formula was the closest on the market to the Medifast drinks. I like it, though it's a little watery. I'm also reading a book right now called Wheat Belly. Very interesting read and along the same lines as Atkins (somewhat).
Good luck!0 -
