Any runners/walkers with this? How did you heal?

Try this to help alleviate some of the pain.

Sit up straight in a chair with both feet on the floor.
Now bring up one foot and cross the ankle on the opposite leg just above the knee. Push down carefully on your raised leg at the knee then sit up straight and lean forward slightly.
Hold for 30 seconds then repeat.
Do for both legs for 3-4 sets daily.

I see this quite often when doing sports massage. usually it's the piriformis compressing the sciatic nerve, a good massage therapist could do some good compressions and pin and stretch it as well as show you what stretches you can do on your own. the other option I think for it is the sciatic nerve has grown through the piriformis so every time the muscle contracts too much or becomes inflamed it can cause the sciatic nerve to act up.

I'm thinking it's time to see a PT. I can lift my knees straight up but going down stairs or the forward movement in walking is causing crushing pain in one butt cheek.

In almost 1/5 people the sciatic nerve pierces through the piriformis. If this isn't the case, then the muscle can still irritate the nerve which will travel beneath the muscle. This is what causes piriformis syndrome!

First line treatment is a stretching and exercise program. However if this doesn't work, sometimes medications will be needed (including steroids). Your best bet is to see a physiotherapist and trial stretching/exercise and if there's no progress then your doctor may have other suggestions!

Hope this helps (Medical Student) :)

I have Piriformis Syndrome. I have for quite a while. I take Hydrocodone for Pain. I'm a procrastinator when it comes to Exercise. I start, but I don't continue with it. I know that Yoga helps and there's also exercises that help with the Pain. I'm having such a hard time with ALL the Pain I have with PS. I sometimes just don't exercise, because I don't want to hurt more.
The TRUTH is: You hurt more not Exercising. Did you know that???? Well. if didn't, you do now.
O top of that I now have a problem with my Rotator Cuff. My left side. I'm taking a Anti-Inflammatory Drug right now, which is actually helping.
I hope I continue to feel better with my Rotator Cuff.
I mostly want to start back Exercising again. When I do, I'm going in Head-Strong.
