Sunflower seeds..

Hi, my name is Greyson, and I'm an addict.
I love sunflower seeds; quite possibly the best food on this planet.
With this delicious, easy food comes ... sodium! I easily eat a bag a day. I rarely go over on calories, but I think the sodium is turning into an issue.
Is there an alternative? I eat them whilst I work a lot.. They keep me focused, and I'm convinced I work better. There's probably one calorie in one seed.. So, I could eat like 500 of them a day, easily. I don't think there's anything like that on this planet. I am not really a fan of other salty foods - the kind my sister tried to get me to eat when I was off seeds for a year - pistachios, pretzals, chips, etc. I do like peanuts and homemade pumpkin seeds, but way less food for way more calories.
Also, there a great source of protein, which I, as a vegetarian, don't get enough of. Not to mention, they have fiber and calcium which are good for you..I mean, I could probably eat 500 peas or 1,000 grains of rice, but that's nowhere near the same thing, ya know? HELP! Thanks in advance.

I love sunflower seeds as well. I get David's sunflower seed reduced sodium one. They still taste the same to me lol.
But I only get a handful of them, so maybe you should try it too. It's less calories and sodium.0 -
I bought six packages of the reduced sodium the other day; they taste totally different for me. I prefer Giant's Spicy Garlic, but now I've switched back to David's Jumbo, or Big's Roasted and Salted will do in a pinch. It's not really about calories, I guess about sodium, but really, I took them home, brought them back to return them, couldn't, so I just gave them too a hungry looking man who asked me for change.0

I love them! They go so well in salads, especially if toasted. My thing right now is to put on a put of porridge, chop up a banana, and then in the last few minutes before the porridge is cooked, put the sunflower seeds on to toast. Then it's banana, porridge, brown sugar and sunflower seeds... the heat from the sunflower seeds sort of... caramelises the sugar. Yummmmmmm.
There's no problem with sodium if you buy the unflavoured seeds. I just eat them raw or toasted (dry fryed for a few minutes). They're ridiculously tasty and the thought of coating them with some sort of flavouring powder is actually a bit offputting.0 -
Are you eating them with some kind of coating? I eat plain ones and don't have a sodium issue.0

Are they really only about a calorie a seed? All of the calculators I've used say between about 4.5 and 6.5. If they were only a calorie each I'd start eating them again.0

You got a "reduced sodium" brand. Are there unsalted brands out there? Is it the salt/spice on the shell that you actually like or the seed itself. Sounds like you're married to the flavor? I'm assuming that unsalted seeds are available somewhere but will admit I didn't do the research before posting. Go that route, if possible.0

Seed madness! Try a "seed salad" with hemp seeds, chia seeds, and pumpkin seeds mixed in with your sunflower seeds. Flavor orgasm!0

Winco has some in bulk that are not salted at all you could but those and then season them your self. If you like the garlic ones put some in a bag sprinkle with garlic powder, give it a good shake and then bake them on a cookie sheet one the lowest setting your oven will go for a few mins (not sure how long it would take) to make on the garlic...then you will know exactly what is on it and not as much sodium if it is just the garlic powder. You can also do other seasoning as well-cayenne pepper, ranch, pepper. You could even add salt but that way you control how much sodium is on them.0
