Wrist weights while exercising?

I am very keen to add a bit of weight training to my exercise regime, but I don't have the money to go to a gym to use the weight room. I do cardio on a small stepper machine and in on week 3 of c25k at the moment and I was wondering if anyone here had any thoughts on whether getting some wrist weights to wear during my work out would be worth it?
I know lifting is a very important part of toning up and should be combined with cardio for optimal weight loss and muscle development, so I would love to get advice if anyone has any!
