My name is Candace, I am a 34 year old mother of three and I have been Hypothyroid since 2001 though I have never really managed it actively up until about April of this year. I think my rock bottom moment came when I realized I weighed as much as my husband 236 lbs. I am so tired of buying bigger clothes to fit my body and I am tired of all the aches and pains this extra weight brings with it. I want to be healthy to see my daughters and son grow up and have families of their own. I am finally taking my Levothyroxine everyday and am working with my doctor to get my levels right. I am trying to restrict myself to a 1200 calorie a day diet and am doing Zumba 3 - 4 times a week and walking at least 4.5 miles a day on the day's I don't dance.

I really am determined to meet my goal but really feel I need more encouragement.

I'm just going to be straightforward because I have been dealing with Hashimoto's for 10 years now. I see it as an excuse that people use for not being able to lose weight. Yes, it creates much more of a challenge, but it doesn't make it nearly as impossible as people like to make it seem. My hair falls out, I'm freezing all the time, my metabolism is shot, and I struggle to lose weight. I view it as a challenge, however, and not another reason to give up. My levels are consistently off, and they've increased my meds close to 5 times in the last 1.5 years. I've still lost 18+ pounds in 4 months, and I have more to go. It takes longer and you have to be careful, but the fact of the matter is, if you eat less than you burn, you will lose weight!

Again, I don't mean to sound harsh or not compassionate, because I know what it's like and I go through it everyday. I just encourage you to view it as something to overcome rather than a reason to give up. It is completely possible to lose weight with hypothyroidism, although more difficult. Good luck with everything! Just stick to an eating plan and make sure you exercise! Any movement is a step in the right direction!

    Hi Candence,
I have been diagnosed with Hashimoto about 15 years ago. Not easy as i never know when my thyroid is working or not. My gyn doctor put me on synthroid, but when i changed familly doctors and did the tests they came back normal. so the doc stopped the meds for about 3 years at which time he realised that i do have a problem( after tests). After i went to a specialist my synthroid dose trippled and so did my weight.

I am finally taking the steps to get healthy and not use my disease as an excuse.

Thanks for the direct honesty and I agree I refuse to allow myself to be defined by my condition nor use it as a crutch or excuse why I can't do something. I just don't think until now I really was ready to take being Hypo seriously.

I was on levo t4 for 12 years and never felt much better. Got a huge bump when I added liotho/cytomel/t3. Pay attention tot he levels your doctor puts you at too. Sometimes they undertreat you to the point where your TSH level is 3.9 when anything above 4 is abnormal. I would suggest getting down to a solid 2 on the TSH level.

  • Hello everyone.

I am 39, mother of two boys and I just started my medication for Hypothyroidism. Glad to have people on here dealing with the same thing. My husband and I are a week into MFP and we both lost 6lbs. Its a little rough but we're getting used to it.
