So my sister swears by the stuff. I only just recently heard about it-I do know tha ta lot of people who follow a vegan diet/lifestyle use it and eat it but...

Maybe this is a lame question, how does one use it? What does it taste like? My sister said she really enjoys it-I'm always interested in trying new things.

Anyone got some good information for me?

As a vegan who eats nutritional yeast a lot, I can offer some insight(:
It looks like powdery flakes... and tastes kind of cheesy and nutty. Great for making vegan cheese sauce (:
Or use it in place for cheese on pasta, sprinkle it on salads, etc. It's also a great way to dry out things you're cooking (eg. if i'm cooking tofu and there's too much excess moisture in a pan, a tablespoon will dry it out and add extra flavour)

I'm sure someone else can fill you in with nutritional info!

You can just sprinkle it on salad, and eat it that way.
And I agree with makemewanna die, it's also great on homemade popcorn.
    I love this recipe: http://domesticaffair.blogspot.ca/2009/02/because-we-need-rainbow.html
Scroll down for the salad dressing... it's not low cal, but in moderation, it's so good!

I am in the process of figuring out if it makes me sick after eating it for a few months. If you can tolerate it then it has a ton of benefits.

I love this stuff. I buy Lotus Savoury Yeast Flakes (that's the brand I've found in Australia) and I can eat the stuff by the handfull if I'm not careful!

As others have said, you can use it to make vegan cheese sauce and on popcorn. Some other ways include:

    * sprinkling about 1/2 Tbsp on top of unbuttered toast as a bast to avocado on toast, or eggs on toast (i even love it under my peanut butter)

    * using it as a low-cal replacement for cheese in home-made pesto

    * using a couple of spoonfuls to thicken up soups

    * as a crumb instead of breadctumbs

    * on top of salads/veggies/everything

    * you can mix it up as a dip with other ingredients

    and the list goes on.

If you have a look in the database for Lotus Savoury Yeast Flakes, you will see the protein/cal/carb/etc count. I know that 1 Tbsp has a couple of grams of protein in it, so it's good as an easy protein boost, as well as being high in Vitamin B12.
