Yay! I got a new food scale!

 I never thought I'd be excited about a new food scale!
I had one already, just a very basic one with a plastic dish to weigh the food. I broke the plastic dish, and have been weighing with plastic plates, but it's a pain to weigh the plates, then zero out the scale so you're getting the correct measurement.
So I went to Bed Bath & Beyond today and bought a new digital scale. I got the Biggest Loser scale for only $20! Now I'll be sure to have an accurate reading, not just best guessing!
For those of you who don't have one, a kitchen scale is an absolute necessity! You don't realize how much you're eating until you measure it out!

I love my food scale!!! It's the Eat Smart scale. You're so right, you have no idea what you're really eating until you weigh your food!! I was eating a lot more of some foods than I realized! Meat and nuts especially!!0

I already love the digital way more than the other. I built a salad on it. Put on the bowl, zeroed it out. Added an ounce of nuts, zeroed it out, added cheese, zeroed it...etc. So much esier than weighing each and every item separately and mixing it all!
I do have a dumb question though. A quarter cup is two ounces. When I filled 1/4 cup with shredded cheese and weighed it, it came to one ounce. Why is that? Is it because shredded cheese isn't very dense? So you need more of it to fill 1/4 cup to 2 ozs? The same with my edamame...1/4 cup was only 1 ounce. So have I been overestimating how much I'm eating?0 -
Yes they are wonderful, I bought mine for Culinary School, it comes in very handy for mesasuring baking ingredients too! Not that I really get to do much baking anymore but I use it all day everyday now!! I got mine from Office Max lol.0

you're comparing weight (ounces) and volume (a quarter cup)... two completely different things.
ex. fill a bucket with feathers and the same bucket with rocks. which weighs more? each have the same volume, but one weighs more than the other0 -
Yep, I love the tare button too! I do the same thing w/ my salads!! The weight and volume are different. I usually weigh by grams, it is usually listed on the package. Same with fruit. It is listed here in the database to weigh by grams raw.0

A friend of mine explained it to me too. She also recommended me to go by grams.0

Yep, I like to weigh by grams. Very easy to use and easy in the database to add each food. I do weigh my meat by ounces though!0 -
Ok thanks to all of the lovely people here I went to BB&B and got the Biggest Loser digital scale. What are the pros and cons of weighing by grams vs ounces?0

When I starting weighing I was surprised by how much I was underestimating my servings on meat, and spaghetti noodles. I was eating double what I thought I was. It's nice to have-but I feel so gipped!:grumble:0

if you're weighing out shredded cheese and the nutritional info lists the serving size in grams, then use your scale to weigh by grams. if you're weighing chicken and the nutrional info lists the serving size in ounces (most meats are in ounces) then use your scale to weigh by ounces. i use my scale and measure based on what the nutritional info on the package uses.
and not to beat a dead horse, but when you use your scale to measure ounces, its weight NOT fluid ounces, such as a 12 ounce can of soda.0 -
I'm still learning about weighing and grams vs ounces & fl ounces. I'm assuming the scale doesn't weigh fluid ounces just grams and ounces.0
