Discouraged

It wasn't until the beginning of this month that I was serious about losing weight and I've already lost 5 pounds. As of this week, I started weighing myself everyday, first thing in the morning, but I only take my official weight on Monday mornings. The thing is, my weight has already gone up a pound since Monday. I've been active, making healthier food choices, haven't gone over my calories, and try my best to eat back my net calories. It's so discouraging. Is it water weight, muscle, or am I doing something wrong?

Water weight - Normal fluctuations. Just tell the scale that you hate it and move on. Don't quit!0

You'll go bananas weighing yourself every day! Your weight fluctuates a lot for a lot of reasons; it could be water weight (and sorry if TMI) but it could also be that you haven't had a bowel movement. I know it's hard but just try and weigh yourself once a week you'll be a lot happier trust me Just hang in there!0

Don't worry, I don't plan on quitting! I've actually felt a lot better, aside from the scale thing, since I've started using mfp. Until just recently, I never really put much thought into what went into my body. Now, I've been making much healthier choices0

It is water. This totally normal and nothing to be worried about. Keep doing what you are doing.0

I think I might just go with Monday mornings only then. It's so tempting though when you know that you've done really well the day before, and you're hoping to see some change on the scale. I also like to play my Wii Fit when I have some down time, and it's hard not to weigh myself there.
And about the Tmi(haha) I always go before I weigh myself.
I'll hang in there0 -
What you're doing wrong is weighing yourself daily. It will end up driving you crazy. Once I stop weighing, I started losing major weight. Don't be discouraged! The best of luck to you.0

My weight fluncates day to day for two reasons. If I eat too much sodium the day before, I know I will see a gain. The extra weight is always gone the next day. The other reason is TOM. The extra weight plus some is gone the next week.0

If you haven't done so already, take measurements as well. As you exercise and engage in activity you may be losing inches and not pounds and sometimes it is better to have a NSV (non scale victory) than to actually have a scale victory. Also, keep weigh in to once a week. That is definitely enought. Good luck!0

I had this problem until I started hiding my scale (or my SO hid if from me actually) I could easily go down 4 lbs and up 5 then down 2 then up 1 etc all within a week based on digestion, water retention, sodium, bloating, that time of the month, stress. Its so hard to pin point it. The best thing you can do is weigh yourself less, continue with what you are doing and judge the results more on how you feel about yourself, your strength, your clothes fitting, instead of just concentrating on the scale.0

once a week is probably best, I usually roll with Wednesday's, cuz sometimes I splurge on the weekends. Stress is not good for you so stay away from the scale .. if you can.0 -
Keep in mind that if you get in a fantastic weight lifting session that you will see a potentially big jump in the scale. This can even last for a week or more, when you jump up your workouts it is normal to see this. Just keep going...0

You're weight will fluctuate daily, don't let it beat you up.0

What is TOM?0

No offense, but if your worried about it like that only weigh yourself once a week you will be happier! Your weight fluctuate all the time. Its not a big deal to be a pound heavier after a few days. Take it in stride and move on! Good luck0

Okay, I know everyone tells you not to weigh every day, but I focus better and have more success when I do. The normal water/sodium/hormone/whatever fluctuations don't bother me, probably because I DO log the changes on myfitnesspal. So every time I go up a little and then down again, myfitnesspal records it as a new loss. I know all the loss isn't "new," but it still gives me a charge. It's frequent validation of my success, that each of my efforts is leading to good things, and that I'm trending in the right direction. ... So when myfitnesspal cheers me on, you'll know it might not all be new but that it's giving me a boost.0

I am on day 7 of P90X and have a goal of 1200 cal every day. I also do cardio jogging, running up steps and a hill. My weight is 146 lbs and I want to drop down to 135. My weight hasnt changed at all and my problem area is my tummy which hasnt changed at all either0

I watched my weight creep up 1 kg over a two-week period. Then, over four days, the kilogram disappeared, along with a further 300 grams. The past two weeks, my weight did nothing, then, over the past two days, I saw it drop another 500 grams. But that just means that, over the past month, I've lost an average of 250 grams a week. That isn't shabby. That isn't shabby at all.0

Your weight will fluctuate daily. The scale can be your friend and enemy also. Try to put the scale up and weigh once per week. Scale obsession can discourage you, especially when your doing right. One liter of water weighs 2.2 pounds. Hopes this helps. From a nursing prospective.0

Good idea I think I'll try that!0

Thanks for all your advice everyone! You're all very kind and it means a lot.0

I weigh myself everyday but only track Friday mornings. I use the scale as more of a guide because your weight will fluctuate daily. When its down I celebrate the victory and when its up I am more mindful of what I'm putting in my mouth the next day.0

hey 5 pounds is great for that amount of time...
Your gain could be cos of those reasons above, could also be cos of Menstrual Cycle0
