Hi there. I live near Savannah, Ga., and it is REEEEEEEEEEALLY hot here. I walked tonight after dark, and I'm still sweating to death, as it is still 87 degrees and it's VERY humid. My question is this: When you walk in the excessive heat like this do you burn more calories? Thanks!

I live in New Orleans so I know what you mean about heat and humidity in the South, in July. Ugh!

I have a heart rate monitor that measures calories, and unfortunately I have found that I don't earn any more calories for the same workout when it is hot and humid than I do on a cooler day, even though it seems like it takes so much more effort to complete my workouts when it is hot.

All I can suggest is walking in a mall or on the indoor track at a gym, until the weather cools down.

I don't burn more calories, but I find my tolerance of the heat has increased dramatically. I live in Houston, TX and walk outdoors 4-5 days a week. Early in the morning it's usually mid 80's and humidity in the mid to upper 70's at the minimum.

You burn more calories when it is cold out because your body is using extra energy to keep you warm. The closer you are to shivering while you are exercising, the more calories you are burning. I almost never lose weight in the summer for this reason.

I live near Warner Robins, GA and I definitely know what you mean! I try to get my cardio done in the morning (usually around 8-9 am) before it gets too hot and humid. This morning when I went outside and jogged at 9 am, it was already 82 degrees w/ a heat index around 90. Terrible! But, I didn't burn more calories :(

Baton Rouge, Louisiana and I am melting. I just try to workout indoors or right after a thunderstorm. And I bring water (in an UGLY fanny pack :embarassed: ). I just note the normal calories.
