It seems as though if I eat healthy and exercise the weight is slow to come off, BUT if I do the Low-Carb diet and exercise the weight comes off rather quickly. Can anyone tell me why they think this is so? And is anyone else having sucess with low carb diet?

  • First of all, low carb diets/high fat (like Atkin's) work, but you will gain your weight back quickly after you start eating carbs again. IMO

Google "low carb diets" and it should give you some insight.

Now, following a low calorie diet, plus low carb will be your best bet.

The reason high carb diets make us gain weight is that most of those carbs are refined, which makes them very easily digestible. That can be a good thing if you need a quick boost before a long run, but for most of the time, it's not so good. See, the carbs are digested faster than your body can use them. And as with all other types of calories, if your body can't use them right away, they get stored as fat. The trouble with that is that it's harder for the body to use fat for energy because it has to be converted back into glucose first. New carbs coming in are already close to that form, so the body will use those first, and the fat stays put. Proteins and fats are digested at a slower rate because they take more work to be broken down into components that are useable for the body for energy.

So, the reason we lose weight more quickly on low carb diets is that more of the food we eat is actually used by the body before it can be stored as fat. And since we're not putting new carbs in, when the body needs more energy, it has to pull from the fat stores because there isn't anything else. Of course, this only works if you also keep total calories in mind. ANY kind of extra calories will be stored as fat if your body can't use them.

You will probably see similar results with a "right carb" diet that includes fruits and whole grains as long as you limit the amount of refined carbs, and you spread them out through the day.

My doctor explained to me that when you follow a lower carb eating plan your insulin levels stay steady which allows your body to burn the fat.

Also, you are eating more naturally. Natural protein and fat from animal sources. Fresh or frozen vegetables and some fruits............

The key with adding back in higher carb foods is to add them slowly and one at a time. That way your body can adjust and you won't gain weight that way!!!

Good luck and PM me with any questions you might have...............I know a little bit of something about low carbing with 6 years experience.
