Saw this link and thought of you guys:

Michael Pollan's top 20 food tips (submitted by readers of his column)

Mary, I sometimes hear myself saying things along the lines of "one cookie is enough for anybody" along the lines of what you once said. There are some gems in this list, too.:flowerforyou:

Those were great, V. I like the one about eat your fruit before you leave the table - I might incorporate that one. My mom always said "if you're not hungry enough to eat an apple, you're not hungry"

Well, it's the big day. For some reason, I'm a little nervous - even knowing I can cut the ride short. I think I'm worried about the rest of the day - we are going to a friend's house for dinner - and while I'll be hungry enough to eat food, even if I don't like it, I might fall asleep while eating it. Husband's coworker, who was going to come, got sick (flu maybe? yikes!), so husband will have to finish alone.

Report back later. Oh, and I'm already planning another ride next weekend

    Bike ride, boogaloo!

Hope you have/had a great ride Mary. If there was wind, I hope it was at your back.

Today I have a session with my trainer, and not much else planned. I still don't feel like myself from the cold I had, so I'm hoping that some endorphins will perk me up. I need some perking.

I don't feel like I had a very good eating day yesterday. No big large portions, but bad choices. Today I'm trying to turn that around. Mostly, I just felt lazy and it was much easier to open the box of graham crackers and the secret stash jar of Nutella (naughty) than to make a meal. Hormones may have been involved, since it's about that special lady time again. So, part of my goal today is to go shopping in order to stock the house with healthy food that indulges this lazy tendency. Usually I like chopping/cooking, etc. . .but just haven't felt like it. I think I'm in a low ebb, and ate a lot of self-doubt yesterday. Today, the battle cry is:
"Better grapes than graham crackers!" (which are really just cookies, actually:tongue: )

So, that's my big Saturday. I feel like a slacker next to you today, Mary.

We're all a bunch of slackers.
I didn't take Alex to swim class again because he was being naughty. :grumble: I didn't really want to go anyway, but he only has a few classes left. So today we are planning to work on cars. We were going out of town but we couldn't justify spending the money. I am really wanting to go traveling.
On an adoption note (you may have seen my post on FB) our paper work is being submitted to the Ministry of Education in Russia on Oct 26! After that we just wait for a child referral, which could take 3 weeks to 6 months. Didn't sleep much last night because I was excited and nervous. lol!
I guess I'd better get off my rear and get busy.
Hope you all have a fantastic day!

I loved that New York Times list!

I'm keeping a few of those posted on the fridge. The one that struck me was "if you're not hungry enough to eat an apple, you're not hungry." Love it!

I skipped the gym yesterday because the wedding was hectic, so I'm off to work out right now. I'm really sore from Thursday's workout and it feels good! Been a while since I was sore. So today:

~ Take a cue from Viv and shop / prep some meals
~ Do 45 minutes cardio + 30 minutes legs strength
~ Get a new battery for my HRM
~ Drink my water! I think I'm still dehydrated from Oz

    Happy Saturday!

Just ate an apple. About to eat another one. Could eat all my lunch, so I'm hungry again.

Did all 63 miles. Took a little over 5 hours riding (6 hours total). I'll post pictures of myself after my dad sends them to me. My dad did the ride to - he's 67. It was fun - don't need to do it again - my butt got so sore. Next weekend is 45 miles. Burned over 2,000 calories - can't remember actually, so that's a good sign.

Feeling pretty dang good about myself, boogaloo!

You should feel good Mary! 63 miles and over 2,000 cals is awesome! Way to go!

I am confessing my weekend now. It's not looking pretty. We are going out to dinner with friends tonight and getting dessert. So today is my cheat day instead of tomorrow. But tomorrow is the monthly lunch for our church at Taco Bell/Pizza Hut. :ohwell: I always split something with DH, but it's still not going to be in my budget for tomorrow. We go for the fellowship, not the food. If it was for the food we'd go somewhere else.
Tomorrow we are working on the pastor's van and then we might go hiking. I need to.
DH and I are planning to go hiking somewhere in a few weeks, while his parents take care of Alex. It may be our last getaway before going to Russia! Then we'll have two kids and won't be going anywhere!
I don't know if I will have time to post tomorrow so have a great rest of the weekend!

    As long as we're confessing.:ohwell:

My trainer canceled on me today (we rescheduled for tomorrow) and I ended up napping for three hours this afternoon and missing workouts.

I'm seriously considering trying to flip myself into morning workouts for the winter. I'm noticing that already I shut down around 5 pm, when the sun starts to go down (and it's only October). I also always feel good when I know I've worked out for the day (the rest of my day feels lighter somehow). But, the question remains: can I haul my butt out of bed early enough to go work out (or pop in a DVD) at 9:30 am four days a week? I've always thought of myself as a night person, and have the luxury of sleeping in most days. . .hmmmm. . .pondering.

AWESOME with the ride, Mary. . .eat all the apples you want!

    Blergh.

I'm in a rut right now. My trainer just canceled again for today, so now I'm going to try to motivate myself to go to Bikram today. Only, I sort of don't want to. Maybe it's not so much a rut as a re-evaluation. I realize that I've gone through little exercise phases: when I first started all I ever wanted to do was elliptical, then it was spinning, then it was dance, then it was yoga and now it's. . . ? I think it should be weights/circuit training type stuff. . . Unfortunately, what I want it to be is napping, which is very bad exercise, I think. I think that I have some sort of seasonal depression kicking in, as I want to sleep all the time and I cry at the drop of a hat right now. Drag.

So, I thinking of one of two options: sort of force myself to go to yoga, and be reminded that I feel better afterwards. Or, taking myself on a long walk. I think that I need the stretching part of the yoga, so I'll probably just go. I'm a weirdo today (more even than usual  )

    Breaking the rut boogaloo!:flowerforyou:

I'm surprisingly not sore today. Knees are a little sensitive, but otherwise I'm fine. Who'd a' thunk? After the ride, I told my dad that the problem with doing 63 and not being worn out is that I know I can do more - though I can't finish the 100 in time, so there aren't too many other options... and really, more than 63 miles is just silly.

Oh a little story from the ride. Every 12 miles or so (about an hour for me) there's a rest stop. There are restrooms, water, gaterade, and food - usually bananas, oranges, and cookies, supplied by the sponsors of the ride. So we are at a rest stop and I'm eating my whole wheat peanut butter sandwich & a banana, when a sponsor points out the rice crispy pre-packaged treats and cookies says "whatcha eating that for, when we have all this good stuff here" . I guess we have a different definition of good stuff.
I try my best not to think about the fact that there is no where to wash your hands! I bring hand wipes, but I'm a rarity.

So today - yoga and walk - come on, V, you can do both too!

    Good stuff, boogaloo!

    Thanks for the nudge, Mary.

I will. I'm bribing myself with a trip to the health food store (one the way to Bikram) cosmetic department.

Oh, and new blog boogaloo, which explores these issues further.

Okay, I am really wanting to take a nap. I didn't sleep that great last night but I really think it has to do with the junk food I've been eating the last few hours. I haven't slept well in a couple of weeks, yet while I am eating well I have been feeling good. I eat poorly and I am so sleepy. I love junk food. I love the way it tastes (usually), but I am really starting to see what it does to me. It has not gotten me to the point of not wanting it anymore though. Maybe I will reach that someday. I'd still go out to eat again if the offer was before me. I'm just like that. I don't tire of junk too quickly. But I am ready to get back to eating better. I'm glad to see such a difference because maybe it will discourage me from eating it so much.
That's my post for the day.
    See you all tomorrow!

Way to go on your ride, Mary! That is amazing.

A pretty quiet weekend here. I spent a little more time on my feet yesterday because we went to a museum, but no real exercise to speak of. We went on a hike today - saw lots of pretty leaves - and I did one set of pushups (for the first time in two weeks). I'll get back to a regular pushup program starting tomorrow.

I had a little junk food today - a crunchy bean taco - and while I didn't think it was too bad, I think it made more hungry later than I should have been. Or maybe it was the whole wheat blueberry walnut pancakes I had earlier (yes, with a little bit of syrup). :ohwell: I'm drinking tea and trying to convince my stomach that I don't really need anything else to eat today. I made it through the whole week without sugar in my coffee, so that's something!

    Till tomorrow! :flowerforyou:

Wrapping up Sunday night with some homemade pumpkin cookies, courtesy of a recipe another MFPer posted. They are great, although could use a little sweetness!

Stayed within calories today and did Jillian's Boost Metabolism workout. WOW! I had to stop a bunch of times during the hour, but I loved it. Followed it up with a 20 minute abs workout. I forgot how much I love Exercise TV!

    See you all tomorrow.
