Power through Pain

I'm new--so sure this topic has come up before....

I just started exercising in a concerted way and feel awful.. I have bad knees from a car accident (had an emergency brake go through one of them when my car was crushed hitting a tree). I know I have to move if I want to continue to loose (lost 65 so far) but after I walk I'm in so much pain I can barely move.

So, I've started taking ibuprofen and icing my knees. Should I be icing or applying heat?
