So I do alot of running and often I do run on bike paths and around big parks so I can't use google maps to track how far I run. I've heard about GPS watches where you wear them on your wrist and can then track how far you run. has anyone used them before? what are good ones?

I have a Garmin Forerunner with a chest strap (a Christmas surprise from my lovely husband!) and I love it.
It tracks my pace, distance, heart rate and logs the route. Then I can download it to the computer and see and sort and play with all the info. You can also set a "virtual partner" to see how your pace is going, you can create workouts (which I haven't used) and my model estimates calories.
I love it because it is a great guide for pace and distance - the GPS doesn't drop out or do weird jumps like Runkeeper or the other apps I've tried on my iPhone.
If you are a numbers nerd, it's a great toy! They aren't cheap but are definitely worth the money in my opinion.
In the meantime - if you want a free way to map your runs, have a look at Runkeeper or Trackmyrun online.0
