What is a goal anyway?

When I started this site I had weight loss goals and I still have a ways to go. I learned that setting short term goals when I reached them left me completely elated. However when they were not met I would become depressed. My wife and I both had these ups and downs. The operative word is HAD. The idea of this site I believe is a frame work for how to own your eating lifestyle. My wife and I truly believe that if we keep this lifestyle we will eventually meet all of our goals. We are being realistic it may take five years but thats ok because even if the scale doesn't show it our health does. For the first time in my life I am no longer thinking of when can I eat normal again. Is this diet working. I didn't lose those two pounds last week. Will this just be another failed diet.

These are questions I hope to never have to ask myself again. I am on a lifetime mission not a quick fix.
what is a goal?
It's waking up every morning and saying I'm a healthier me and saying good job to yourself before you go to sleep. I may slip and I may fall but I will get up again.

    Thanks bigdane321...
I sometimes wonder that same thing. I've fallen a lot lately but with a little help from my friends, I'm able to jump up again and get right back on that horse that knocked me off!

This is a lifestyle change. It didn't take us a couple of months to get to where we are. We've lived our lives this way so if it takes 5 years, so be it. Good luck and thanks for posting this topic...

  • Like you said-your goal is to be healthier. It is a total lifestyle change, and it has to be FOREVER! We, in the group of people with weight problems, have to face facts. It's taken me 5 years to reach my current weight. And I still have 48 pounds to go. But, I feel great. Much healthier, in many ways. I will never go back. That's my goal. Onward, and upward, with good health, and better eating habits. Keep up your good work . Chris.

    Kudos!!
I've been happy with my weight loss since joining this site, but last week I 'only' lost .5 pounds...not for a minute was I upset
I really believe if I stick with this site, food journal and eating healthier....the weight will come off

I have to say I still have my goal or magic number in my head...not sure how that will change in time...

Agree 100%. As I see it, that is a successful perspective because it took years of lifestyle to put it on. It's more important to take it off in a way that you can stick with for a lifetime, than to get it off asap.

For myself, I'm finding that balance where I don't have to work hard at it, but the weight loss comes steadily. I rarely enter all my calories on a daily basis because it's all becoming natural habit.

My weight loss is definitly slower now than my first few months, but I no longer feel like I am on a diet. I think that is how Life ought to feel. :smokin:

Some very good people told me (at a moment of dietary frustration) to always remember this:

It is a Marathon, not a Sprint. You are in this for the long haul, and not just to fit into that bikini this summer.

I agree totally that if you look at it like a diet, it is too easy to fall off. When you view it as a lifelong, lifestyle change, it makes it so much easier.
