Hip pain advice

I have been having some hip pain, and wonder if anyone can offer some advice. My exercise consists of bike riding, walking, and light weight lifting (20 minutes, 2-3 times a week). I googled to see what kind of advice, but I think I am more confused. I haven't seen a doctor yet, I have never experienced this type of pain, and thought it would go away, but it hasn't. Obviously, I would prefer any option that opposes surgery. Any advice as to what kind of doctor to see, or any meds or exercises that might help. Very much appreciate any advice.

Go see your PCP, they can recommend exercises to do, or have you see a specialist. The internets are not the place to ask for advice when you are in pain.0

See your GP doc first. or PCP or whatever acronym you like.
I had hip pain too. Foam rolling my IT band cleared it right up. Ask your doctor if this is right for you!
YMMV.0 -
Hip pain is pretty open ended and you don't say what type of pain or if you felt it start after one type of activity. I would recommend a chiropractor first. I have a lot of hip issues and visit one once a month or so for maintenance.0

Hip pain is a little vague so it's hard to really give advice.
If you're still mobile, you could always try some mild hip and groin stretches and see if it helps any. As an exemple, "hula-hoop" is a good movement for flexibility rotating your hips in wide circles one side than the other, or drawing 8 shapes. You might wanna make sure you're alone, cuz it does look silly. Also a kneeling lunge helps a good bit. If you look up "hip stretches" on google there are a lot of these you can do that, unless they really hurt when you do them, are good to do either way!
Doing a good number of squats and lunges variation is good to strengthen the muscles around the hip thus relieving some of the stress put on it. Just make sure you don't overdo it.
Also make sure you sit with a proper posture. And seeing a doctor/chiropractor would be a good idea if it doesn't go away. Especially if you've been dealing with it for a while0 -
it might just be tendonitis that can go away on its own with some icing, rest and stretching but I would go see doc just in case...you dont wanna get laid up altogether and get derailed now0

Hi. I started getting hip pain in my lower right hip after I started zumba classes and running. I went to the doctor and found out I had bursitis. There are exercises he gave me to do and basically told me to cut out what caused the most pain until it subsided, so I still did zumba, but not all the squat moves and side moves and I went back to walking. It took about six weeks to feel better to the point I could run and do all-out, intense zumba again. A month ago, I started really running because I want to prep for my first 5K in September, and now I'm getting pain in my upper left hip. I don't know what it is, but I hear from many active, healthy people that they have hip pain. I just invested in expensive running shoes hoping that helps. If your hip hurts to the touch, then it may be bursitis - it hurts to sit, lay down, drive a car, etc. I would lay back on the exercise for a number of days, then work back into one thing at a time, trying to pinpoint what causes it. I'd also see your doctor! I know when I start feeling the bursitis pain again that I will walk instead of run & I will skip zumba. I NEVER want the busitis pain again like I had it! Once you get it, it's always there. Good luck!0

I would say that I was having some mild pain in my back first, but my regular exercise didn't hurt it. The hip pain is fairly recent, and I can't really pinpoint when it started. Usually, if I am sitting, and when I stand up, my right leg just feels like it has locked or something in the hip area. Then it works itself out after I start walking, but I notice it all the time.0 -

^^This! Everytime I go for an adjustment the chiropractor tells me my hips are out of alignment. Usually, after one adjustment, the pain is more or less gone.0 -
1. See a doctor. 2. Meanwhile, place a small pillow between your knees when sleeping and see if this helps to relieve some pressure because it aligns the spine or back. This helps especially if you sleep on your side.0

I recommend seeing an orthopedist. Last year I had severe pain in my knee area. The doctor took several x rays and it is my hip. It is bone on bone. I will require surgery in the next 5 years. He told me to lose weight, do the bike and the elliptical and the best exercise was the pool. It has gotten 100% better. See a doctor, then exercise.0

A chiropractor fixed my hip pain...there are three docs in the office, only the lady adjusts me correctly! I don't like to be "popped" and she used a "clicker" and also some traction. Relief!
Different habits, such as crossing your legs while seated at the computer could do that.0 -
Thank you all very much! It is encouraging to read all of the advice! My problem mainly, is I have never had to deal with any sort of pain, and now I'm like "What?" I am also 53, so part of it I attribute to old age. I have had 3 children, as one poster commented that may have caused issues!0

As a bike rider please check this out on you cycle. Ensure that the nose of the seat is facing perfectly forward. Even a small angle to the left or right can cause your leg to rotate outwards a bit when pedaling and is quite a common source of hip pain for cyclists. Might be an easy fix for ya.0
