my back is killing me

My lower back is very sore today. Looking for cardio options to not aggravate it for a few days. I don't want to fall back into inactivity

  • How did you hurt it? Where's the pain? As a long time veteran of back pain, I can tell you that you want to take it seriously when your back is screaming at you, and depending on how fresh the injury is, you really might want to just rest for a few days - sorry, I know that's not what you want to hear.

Having said that, the most gentle form of cardio exercise is walking. But depending on why your back hurts, even that might be a bad idea.

Can you describe the injury a bit more and how you got it?

If it is muscle pain then no big deal do whatever. If it is something else then take it seriously as mentioned above and possibly formulate a long term exercise plan to strengthen lower back muscles.

The pain is across my sacro-illiac (sp) joints. Very low back, i think its the periformis(sp) muscle. I aggravated it pulling garden hose watering flowers two days ago.

Ok, cool - I know that joint and that muscle. Have you tried any gentle stretching? (I confess, I'm having a hard time envisioning how you pulled that muscle by pulling a garden hose... It ties your femur to your sacrum, more or less. Was it a twisting motion? If so, it might not be the periformis...)

Also, if it's been two days, I would say take a few advil and go for a easy walk.

Yea. I was twisting trying to free more of the hose. Its about 200 feet long so it gets very heavy. Thanks for the advice. I'm gonna do some stretches and go for a walk.
  • What I'm betting is that you have a bit of a muscle spasm, and maybe some inflammation. Take something that will help reduce the inflammation, and definitely stretch before and after the walk - after is probably more important.
