Fitness On The Road

I am currently parked at the TA truck stop in Bloomington, IL. I picked up a copy if their free magazine RoadKing and it so happens the feature story is about better diet and exercise for truckers on the road.

The article itself is ok, but what I found really helpful is the chart in the back that shows which locations around the country have fitness rooms and/or walking/running trails. I'll be making use of that information to help me plan my over night stops so I can have free access to exercise equipment and jogging trails.

That should be very helpful in my quest to get into better shape.

I will likely scan the charts and keep them on my laptop and tablet in PDF form for easy, permanent access.

I think that is awesome! My husband used to be OTR, but now he is local and drives for UPS. When he was OTR he had a terrible time finding anywhere to workout. Between not knowing where anything was and not being able to park your truck in most places he was helpless.

Now if only there were some healthier food choices at the truck stops. They have the best "bad" food lol.

    Good luck out there :)

It's getting better. TA and Petro are offering a lot more healthy Stay Fit menu choices these days. That, along with more and more fitness rooms is making them my stop of choice these days.

I also just discovered they have an Android app, which I just installed, that lets you do a search on your phone for whatever amenities you are looking for so you can plan your stop. Very handy.

TA was his favorite, I am glad to hear they are offering better choices. He used to text me pics of what he was eating and it was a heart attack on a plate.

    God bless smartphones!!

I think that is great that you can see where the best places to stop over are. My dad was a long haul trucker but died of cancer at the age of 47 years old in 1975. I wonder if better choices back then might have helped him to live a longer life. Glad you have that option!!! You are doing a great job trying to arrange to live a healthy lifestyle! WTG!

I always travel with resistance bands - they don't take up any room at all and you can do just about anything you'd do with a dumbbell.

I also have a few workouts loaded onto my iTunes - - - ones that don't require any equipment and that don't require a lot of space. I can do squats, lunges, etc just about anywhere.

I use the 24 hr fitness in California zip code 90746...It's in the parking lot of a mall right next to IKEA...I frequently see a complete truck with a trailer attached when I go at 3AM or so...not sure if it's the same truck, or different ones, but at that time in the morning the whole parking lot is wide open, and fits a big truck easily.

Yeah I'm going to be picking up some resistance bands in the near future.
