Please recommend protein powders that don't taste like a**

I have not had good luck with protein powders over the years. The chalky taste, the heavy feeling after I drink them, etc.
Since every seems to be drinking protein shakes these days, maybe the powders have improved! I tried again! I ordered Optimum Nutrition Whey Gold Standard in French Vanilla Creme. Blech! Vanilla flavored chalk! I can barely get it down, even mixed heavily with fruit.
*kitten*'s expensive. Instead of blindly trying another flavor, I thought I would ask you guys.
So,
1) do you actually like the protein shake you are drinking?
2) If yes, what brand/flavor is it and do you mix it with anything? Also, what brands/types have you tried and hated?
I don't really care much about the properties of various protein shakes (type of protein, other stuff in it) so much as that it's PALATABLE and not chocolate flavored. Vanilla, coffee, citrus are all flavorings that I would like.
Thanks!

I like the optimum nutrition whey in strawberry flavor.
Chocolate is a safe bet if you mix with milk.
Vanilla you can mix with yogurt and berries0 -
GNC has some really good ones! They are called Lean Shake 25. They come in a variety of flavors..0

ON Natural Chocolate is what I've been using daily. Tastes great. Very versatile in terms of mixing. It has no artificial sweeteners. I don't normally give a crap about that sort of thing, but since I use it Every Single Day, I figured I'd play it safe.
I tried Myofusion by Gaspari recently (also chocolate) and it was amazingly delicious. It did however have the artificial sweeteners which is a non-issue to most folks.0 -

Amazing is good! Artificial sweeteners don't bother me one bit. It looks like chocolate is the way to go with protein powders.0 -
ON Double Rich Chocolate is awesome, I've bought at least 5 5lb containers in a row and still love it.
But it looks like you don't want chocolate, so the french vanilla is ok.0 -
I like my chocolate protein powder, BlueBonnet Whey Protein Isolate. Has only a few ingredients and doesn't taste like puke even when I mix it with water instead of milk.0
-
I use EAS Whey Vanilla as it is bland enough I don't taste it much in my shakes. I buy that in bulk at sames and then sometimes buy the pre-made chocolate myoplex drink for after hard workouts.0
-
I use the Avidlite Dietimeal powder in dark chocolate. I tried so many others, but this is the only one I can stomach x0
-
Thanks! I've written some of these down - I guess the trick is to just try until I find some I like.0

Dynatize ISO-100. Low calorie, low fat, low carb. Mixes well and tastes great. I've only tried the Gormet Chocolate and Vanilla.0

Chocolate is always the safest bet for flavor. But.. MusclePharm Combat Powder is hands down the BEST whey isolate protein powder I've ever tasted. I've tried several flavors. Chocolate peanut butter, banana cream, cookies and cream, and now I'm on the chocolate milk flavor.. all have been really good with just water and ice. Milk would make them a lot better (also a lot more high cal, so I stick to water or coconut milk).
You can find it at bodybuilding.com for cheap. $40 for a 4 pound tub.0 -
Acg on my FL recommended Trutein to me. The one I like best that I've tried so far is the Peanut Butter Cup. It's tastes so good! I think it's better with milk but it's still good with water.
I'll pass along the link for samples that he gave me..

Edited to add: All we had in the house for a few days was a chocolate powder by Power Bar. Disgusting.0 -
New Zealand Whey is pretty good, I've tried a bunch and its the best one so far personally.
It mixes well too which is what bugs me about most of the other brands I've tried.0 -
I'll double check the brand but it's the one Walmart carries in Vanilla. I mix it with skim milk, and actually like the taste....I would imagine mixed w/fruit would be even better, but I don't bother.0

Agreed, I love the Double Rich Chocolate. Everybody who I've spoken to that was looking for good tasting protein power really like this one. I'm VERY picky about food/drinks and I love this stuff.0 -

I have the GNC Total Lean 25 in Cookies and Cream and Rich Chocolate. I like the CnC better than the chocolate but that's because I'm not a chocolate person. The chocolate is a lot thicker than the CnC though so it's almost like a milkshake when you mix them. I use Almond Breeze Almond Milk (40 cal) to mix mine with so it doesn't taste as much like a** as if it was with just water. The chocolate especially mixed with water tastes like...well you get the idea. But they are pretty good. I've tried the Vanilla Bean one as well and that's good too.0 -
Try Larry Scott's protein shakes. I think the vanilla is very good. You can order it at www.larryscott.com0
-
If you like iced coffee...try BSN Syntha 6 Mocchachino flavored. Sooo good0
-
i dont drink my whey shakes for the taste, i drink it for the nutritional value
grow a pair and suck it up, not everything healthy is going to taste AMAZING, gotta make some sacrifices0 -
Dynatize ISO-100. Low calorie, low fat, low carb. Mixes well and tastes great. I've only tried the Gormet Chocolate and Vanilla.
I love the Dymatize ISO-100 with unsweetened almond milk and some frozen fruit. Tastes just like a milkshake! So good after a hard workout!0 -
Six Star whey protein by Muscletech (sold at Walmart). I love the vanilla cream flavor mixed with almond milk. There is 30g of protein per scoop for only 160 calories. A 2# container costs between $18 to $19.0
-
Drink milk - does the same job, a lot cheaper and tastes great!0
-
Vega Chocolate!!! now whey or soy! loveeeeeeeeeeeee its the best tasting protein powder i've ever tasted and i love the nutrition value and what's in it.0

i look forward to it everyday after my workouts0 -
I did it wrong at first, but again, God bless you for this suggestion. If you like iced coffee...try BSN Syntha 6 Mocchachino flavored. Sooo good0

Tried and liked Optimum Nutrition strawberry, chocolate, vanilla, cookies&cream and what else, cake batter and banana!0

Honestly, I use the cheap Body Fortress Chocolate flavor from Wal-Mart. Only $15 a tub and the chocolate tastes great mixed with milk. I've had the Vanilla too, and it's not bad.
A friend of mine got an orange flavor from GNC and when you mix it with milk, it tastes like a creamscicle.
Good luck!0 -
I just picked up the ON Gold Standard Vanilla Ice Cream because I'm already using the Muscle Milk Chocolate (which is quite good). The Vanilla Ice Cream is....OK. I think I'll go the Double Chocolate route when I burn through this batch. Blending with the Vanilla Ice Cream and some fruit would probably be tasty, but I usually down these at work and that's not an option.0
