Learning to ride a bike as an adult?

I am 40 years old, and I have never learned how to ride a bike. I've decided that this weekend is the time that I'm going to learn. My 6 year old daughter has actually offered to teach me.:) I went out today and bought a helmet, but I still haven't bought a bike. Obviously, I know nothing about bikes. Does anyone have recommendations on what kind I should buy? Any other tips you could share? My husband knows how to ride, but he's doesn't do any sort of physical activity, so I don't know how helpful he will be.

Start with a basic cruiser, if you're just planning on biking down smooth roads and such. The tires are wide, they're comfortable and easy to ride, and a bit more stable than the racer-type bikes. A good bike shop will set you up with the right size and style for you.

I agree. A hybird, commuter bike or even a mountain bike would be great. A racer type bike has narrow tires and would make negotiating turns more difficult. You're smart to get a helmet too!

My youngest son had a bad bike accident when he was 8. He never got back on a bike until we was 18. Now he loves it!
Try to find an flat area with little or no traffic to practice. Of course, it you have walking paths or bike trails, it would be an ideal place to ride! It make take a few tries to get your balance, but you'll figure it out!

Good luck to you and have fun!:flowerforyou:

Thanks for the suggestions. I actually tried to go to a bike store many years ago, and they laughed at me. At the time I was so embarrassed that I walked out, but now that I'm 40 I think I'll have more of an f*** you attitude if they laugh at me again. There are some positives to getting older. :)
